Call for Papers for the Special Issue of the Business History Journal "In the Absence of Archives: Lessons from Less Developed Countries"
The business history field has evolved, covering diverse regions from India to the Middle East. This expansion has spotlighted areas like informal businesses and entrepreneurial diaspora networks. However, the methodology derived from Western studies often falls short when analyzing business in less developed countries (LDCs).
Challenges in studying the business history of LDCs include:
- Absences: Limited archival records and biases in recording.
- Ruptures: Disruptions like foreign domination and political revolutions.
- Silences: Archives that omit the experiences of the marginalized.
- Secrets: Restricted access to historical records in many LDCs.
This Special Issue (SI) aims to address these challenges, using unconventional sources and fresh conceptual tools. We encourage submissions that not only identify challenges but also provide solutions. Scholars from underrepresented regions are especially encouraged.
The deadline for submitting an abstract is March 2024; more information here
