Van Gogh & Picasso in the archives

30-03-2023

It’s the 170th anniversary of the birth of Vincent van Gogh (30 March 1853) and 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso (8 April 1973) this Spring, so we are digging in our archives to find interesting material about these two artists, who only briefly overlapped in this world (Picasso was only 8 years old when van Gogh died), but who are possibly the most representative, and arguably the most iconic, of their centuries.

Pics 01-02 - Excerpts of the letters to his brother Théo and to Émile Bernard.

The Archives Départementales du Finistère holds the original copies of the correspondence of van Gogh with his younger brother, Théo, and with fellow painter and friend Émile Bernard, available here. The letters were also published in a volume.

Pics 03- 06 - Guernica returning to Spain

Picasso's most famous paining is arguably Guernica - an immense (35x77 metres) warning sign of the horrors of war. In spite of its size, the painting immediately started to travel to international exhibitions in Europe, after its completion in 1937; after Francisco Franco's victory in Spain in 1939, Guernica was sent to the United States to raise funds and support for Spanish refugees. At Picasso's request, the safekeeping of Guernica was entrusted to the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), and he also requested that the painting would not return to Spain until liberty and democracy has been established. Dictator Franco expressed multiple times the desire to have Guernica returned to Spain, but the MoMA followed Picasso's desire. In fact, when Spain becase a democratic constitutional monarchy in 1978, the museum was still hesitant, claiming that Picasso had expressedly talked about Republic, not monarchy. Also, at this point Guernica had been one of the museum's greatest treasures for several decades. MoMA finally ceded to international pressure in 1981; Spanish historian Javier Tusell was one of the negotiators.

These images, held at the Archivo Histórico Nacional in Spain, show the dismantling ceremony; the collection is available here

Pic 09 - Piazza virtuale - a project by Van Gogh TV: 100 days, 24 hours live

The legacy of van Gogh as an artist is evident in the name choice for an important artists' collective that first experimented with digital, interactive art. “Piazza virtuale - a project by Van Gogh TV: 100 days, 24 hours live” was a media experiment that took place in 1992, organised by artists' collective Van Gogh TV, established in 1986 by artists Mike Hentz, Karel Dudesek, Benjamin Heidersberger and Salvatore Vanasco. This group of artists and hackers wanted to transfer the concept of an Italian piazza – a place for casual meetings and conversations – into the media. To do this, they used all the electronic media available at the time to involve the television audience, who could watch the program daily on 3Sat, in what was happening on the screen. A new, computer-controlled television interface was developed that anyone can use at home via telephone, computer, fax, video telephone and ISDN. The home screen became a place in the public space. Via telephone, fax, mailbox and videophone, people could participate in the program, join discussions, get to know each other, make music and paint together, or move an interactive camera in the studio in the city of Kassel, Germany, where Piazza Virtuale was broadcast permanently. It was a joint project between Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and France. The documentation related to the event is held at the Archiv Geschichte der FF Schule, and available here

Pic 10-12 - Picasso Museums

Picasso's artwork and museums dedicated to him are scattered around Europe and the world; the Archives Nationales in France hold the documentation about the Picasso Museum in Paris (available ); the Bern Museum of Art acquired an important Picasso collection in 1963 (you can read the documentation here. On Archives Portal Europe you can also find the photos and documentation about the inauguration by the German Minister of Culture of the 1964 exhibition on Pablo Picasso and Henri Laurens, here. Many more documents and collections dedicated to van Gogh and Picasso are available in a curated selection of APE documents available here

Archives Portal Europe help guide

Please select amongst the relevant tips we can help with. If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will be in touch as soon as possible.

Starting your search here will include all content available in Archives Portal Europe. Simply enter your keyword(s) and hit the search button. Wrap fixed expressions in quotation marks, e.g. “French Revolution”. Check the box to “Search each term separately” in case you are looking for documents containing at least one word, but not necessarily all keywords; this will also allow you to search for the same term in multiple languages at the same time (e.g. “French Revolution” “Révolution Française”). You can also use wildcards - find more about Research Tools here. If you would like to use more specific settings, try our Advanced search

The additional advanced search options give you the possibility to focus your search in:

  • archival documents (Search in archives),
  • names of person and organisations that created, worked with and maintained these documents (Search in names),
  • Institutions currently holding the documents (Search in institutions).

When searching with multiple terms at the same time, wrap fixed expressions in quotation marks (e.g. "French Revolution"), or check the box "Search each term separately" in case you are looking for either one term of the other. This will also allow you to search for the same term in multiple languages (e.g. "French Revolution" "Révolution française"). You can also choose one of the suggestions matching your search term once you start typing.

This will only show results that include documents that have been digitised and are available online
