Today 7 October marks the 455th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto, the 1571 naval battle between the Holy League (made of Venice, Spain, Rome, and other Italian states and headed by John of Austria) against the Ottoman Empire (led by Müezzinzade Ali Pasha). The casus belli was the Ottoman attack on Cyprus (a Venetian possession) the previous year; after seven hours of fighting at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth, the League won by a wide margin, with 25000 deaths on the Ottoman side, against 7500 on the League side.
While often considered a watershed moment in history, in reality the event had little practical effect; the League was quickly dissolved due to internal fighting, and Venice was forced to cede Cyprus to the Ottomans only two years later, in 1573. However, the battle had enormous psychological resonance, marking the end of the myth of the invincibility of the Ottoman fleet, and stabilising the geopolitical thresholds between the Christian and Muslim world in the Mediterranean.
To mark the anniversary, our content provider the General State Archives in Greece, together with the Municipality of Nafpaktia and the cultural association ‘O Epachtos’, have set up the exhibition Ναύπακτος: Πολιορκία και Απελευθέρωση (Nafpaktos: Siege and Liberation), from the 11th October to the 31st December, Mon-Sun 10am-1pm (free admission).
A translation of the presentation is available below:
As part of the events marking the 455th Anniversary of the Battle of Nafpaktos, and on the occasion of the 197th anniversary of the Liberation of Nafpaktos, the General State Archives of Greece (GSA), the Municipality of Nafpaktia, and the Association of Nafpaktians of the Attica Region “O Epachtos” are jointly organising the archival exhibition “Nafpaktos: Siege and Liberation”, at the Dimitrios and Aigli Botsaris Foundation.
For the first time, archival documents, maps, drawings and portraits are being exhibited, allowing visitors to follow the events of the siege and liberation, explore the strategic importance of the fortress, learn about the difficult transition to freedom, and trace the development of the city over time.
The complete body of archival material is included in a special publication edited by the Central Service of the General State Archives of Greece.
The exhibition holds particular significance for the city, as it presents, in the birthplace of Giannis Vlachogiannis, founder and first Director of the General State Archives of Greece, an important collection of documents relating to its modern history. Born in Nafpaktos in 1867, where he also received his early education, Giannis Vlachogiannis devoted his life to preserving, collecting and promoting valuable archival material relating to the Greek War of Independence and the first decades of the modern Greek state. Thanks to his decisive contribution and his personal recommendation to the then Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, the General State Archives of Greece were established in 1914. Vlachogiannis served as their first Director until 1937. More than a century later, the institution to which he devoted his life’s work returns to his birthplace, presenting documents that shed light on an important period in the history of the area.
The exhibition, which is also supported by the Educational Foundation of the Union of Journalists of Thessaly, Central Greece and Euboea (ESIETHStE-E), forms part of the programme of commemorative events marking 455 years since the Battle of Nafpaktos, connecting different historical periods through archival records, collective memory and the city’s enduring presence in Greek history.
