Durant son mandat, George Pau-Langevin propose quatre « plans » pour l’outre-mer (jeunesse, logement, santé, sécurité).
Concernant l’évolution statutaire des DOM-TOM, elle présente en conseil des ministres, le 8 avril 2015, le projet de loi organique relatif à la consultation sur l’accession de la Nouvelle-Calédonie à la pleine souveraineté. Ce texte est promulgué le 5 août 2015, ouvrant ainsi la voie à plusieurs référendums d’auto-détermination.
La ministre doit également faire face à plusieurs nuits de violence à Mayotte, en avril 2016.
Elle laisse à sa successeure Ericka Bareigts, parmi les dossiers en cours, le projet de loi Égalité réelle pour l’outre-mer, sur lequel elles ont travaillé ensemble et dont la consultation citoyenne en ligne a rencontré un certain succès, ainsi que le projet culturel de création d’une Cité des Outre-mer à Paris, qui connaîtra une gestation difficile.
George Pau-Langevin est nommée ministre des Outre-Mer par décret du 2 avril 2014 relatif à la composition du gouvernement Manuel Valls, sous la présidence de M. François Hollande ; ses attributions sont fixées par décret le 16 avril 2014. Après la démission de Manuel Valls et de son gouvernement le 25 août 2014, elle est confirmée dans ses fonctions lors de la formation du gouvernement Valls II par décret du 26 août 2014.
Elle quitte ses fonctions à sa demande le 30 août 2016 et est remplacée à son poste par Ericka Bareigts.
