À la suite de la décision de François Hollande de ne pas se présenter à sa propre succession à la présidence de la République, le Premier ministre en poste, Manuel Valls, présente la démission de son gouvernement le 6 décembre 2016, afin de présenter sa candidature à la primaire de gauche pour l’élection présidentielle de 2017.
C’est dans ce contexte que Bernard Cazeneuve, ministre de l’Intérieur dans le gouvernement sortant, est nommé Premier ministre le 6 décembre 2016, à la tête d’un gouvernement qui reconduit les ministres en poste durant le gouvernement Valls.
Bernard Cazeneuve nomme l’équipe de direction de son cabinet par arrêté du 6 décembre 2016, en choisissant de façon quasi exclusive des collaborateurs déjà présents à ses côtés au ministère de l’Intérieur.
C’est l’arrêté du 7 décembre 2016 qui confirme pour l’essentiel l’équipe en place et détaille la composition de l’ensemble du cabinet. Un grand nombre de conseillers sectoriels, issus du cabinet de Manuel Valls, sont maintenus dans leurs fonctions ou promus.
Compte tenu de la brièveté attendue du mandat de Bernard Cazeneuve, borné par l’échéance présidentielle de mai 2017, la composition du cabinet ne connaît pas d’évolution notable au cours de ses six mois d’existence, seulement ponctuée par quelques départs anticipés et quelques arrivées.
Le gouvernement de Bernard Cazeneuve prend fin le 10 mai 2017.
