Vincent Peillon est nommé ministre de l'Éducation nationale au sein du premier gouvernement de Jean-Marc Ayrault par décret de composition du gouvernement du 16 mai 2012 ; après les élections législatives de juin 2012, Jean-Marc Ayrault remet au président de la République la démission de son gouvernement et en nomme un nouveau par décret du 21 juin 2012. Vincent Peillon conserve ses fonctions. C'est à la suite des élections municipales de 2014 que Jean-Marc Ayrault remet la démission de son deuxième gouvernement au président de la République : le premier gouvernement de Manuel Valls succède alors au deuxième gouvernement Ayrault, et Benoît Hamon succède à Vincent Peillon comme ministre de l'Éducation nationale.
