Alain Peyrefitte (1925-1999) naît le 26 août 1925 à Najac (Aveyron). Prénommé Roger Antoine à la naissance, il change de prénom au cours de ses études pour éviter toute confusion avec l'écrivain Roger Peyrefitte. Il passe son enfance à Aubin, Rodez puis Montpellier.
À la Libération, il arrive à Paris et est reçu à l'École normale supérieure. En 1946, il intègre l'École nationale d'administration et fait ainsi partie de la première promotion, dite « France combattante ». À sa sortie de l'ENA, il est pendant quelques mois attaché, puis chargé de recherche au CNRS.
Le 14 décembre 1948, il épouse Monique Luton (Paris, 4 novembre 1924 - Paris, 9 janvier 2005) avec qui il aura cinq enfants : quatre filles, Florence, Christel, Véronique et Emmanuelle, et un fils, Benoît.
Alain Peyrefitte commence une carrière de diplomate en Allemagne, sous la direction d'André François-Poncet, alors haut commissaire de la Zone d'occupation française en Allemagne. Rentré à Paris en 1952, il repart en 1954 à Cracovie, en Pologne, où il est nommé consul général de France. Il est de retour à Paris en 1956 et se consacre aux affaires européennes au sein du ministère des Affaires étrangères.
En avril 1958, il se présente, sans succès, aux élections cantonales dans le canton de Bray-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne), mais est élu en novembre de la même année député UNR de Seine-et-Marne. Il le reste jusqu'à son élection comme sénateur de Seine-et-Marne le 24 septembre 1995, mandat qu'il conserve jusqu'à sa mort en 1999.
Alain Peyrefitte est également conseiller général de Bray-sur-Seine de 1964 à 1988, premier vice-président du conseil général de Seine-et-Marne de 1982 à 1988, et maire de Provins pendant 32 ans, de 1965 jusqu'à mars 1997.
Dès 1958, Alain Peyrefitte est remarqué par le général de Gaulle qui lui confie le dossier algérien et les questions européennes. Il entre au gouvernement en avril 1962 comme secrétaire d'État à l'Information puis est nommé pour quelques semaines, en septembre de la même année, ministre des Rapatriés. En décembre 1962, il devient ministre de l'Information.
En janvier 1966, à la suite de la réélection du général de Gaulle à la présidence de la République, il est nommé ministre de la Recherche, puis, en avril 1967, ministre de l'Éducation nationale. Il est contraint à la démission le 28 mai 1968.
De 1968 à 1972, Alain Peyrefitte occupe la fonction de président de la Commission des Affaires culturelles et sociales de l'Assemblée nationale. Il effectue en 1971 une mission parlementaire en Chine, à l'origine de la publication en 1973 de son ouvrageQuand la Chine s'éveillera… le monde tremblera.
Secrétaire général du mouvement gaulliste, l'UDR, de 1972 à 1973, il est également chargé de missions de réflexion sur des problèmes de société : la participation (1968-1969) ; la drogue (1969-1970) ; la décentralisation (1973-1974) ; la violence, la criminalité et la délinquance (1976-1977).
De retour au gouvernement en 1973, il nommé au mois de mars ministre des Réformes administratives et du Plan, puis, en février 1974, ministre des Affaires culturelles et de l'Environnement. La mort de Georges Pompidou entraîne son départ quelques mois plus tard, en mai 1974.
En mars 1977, il devient garde des Sceaux et ministre de la Justice du gouvernement de Raymond Barre. Il occupera cette fonction jusqu'en mai 1981. Après la victoire de François Mitterrand, il n'occupe plus de fonction ministérielle et se consacre essentiellement à ses activités d'élu local, de sénateur, d'écrivain et de journaliste comme directeur du comité éditorial duFigaro.
Parallèlement à sa carrière politique, dès ses années d'études, Alain Peyrefitte entame et poursuit une carrière d'écrivain. Son œuvre littéraire lui vaut d'être élu membre de l'Académie française le 10 février 1977, puis de l'Académie des sciences morales et politiques en 1987.
