Educational Tools Project - deadline 27 February 2026
Archives Portal Europe (APE) offers a paid opportunity for educators, creatives and content creators with a background in history and/or archival studies in the context of our educational research projects.
We will finance two types of outputs:
Category 1: Self-paced courses (archival and historical studies)
In this category, we ask applicants to transform and expand one of our current website-based manuals and guides into a self-paced course to be included into our eLearning platform Moodle. You can choose the topic you would want to work on from the following groups of manuals and guides:
• Our guide of How to do research with Archives Portal Europe;
• One of our manuals for data preparation, aimed at existing and prospective content providers to APE;
• One of our guides to how APE makes use of archival standards.
We will pay a lump sum of €2,000 each for up to three completed, tested and approved eLearning courses. Applicants will be asked to sketch out and, if successful, develop further the best approach to their chosen topic, including potentially rewriting or reorganising the existing texts, creating interactive and diverse assessment tools (quizzes, assignments, grading, peer review, etc.), and considering communication & collaboration features (forums, messaging, wikis, etc.), progress tracking & reporting (gradebooks, analytics, competencies) or gamification (badges, leaderboards).
Category 2: In-person classes (educational and historical studies)
In this category, we ask applicants to develop a concept for an in-person class including relevant educational materials for teaching history in schools making use of archives. We are looking for applications that involve a direct collaboration with schools or teachers, while the topic to be covered is up to the applicants themselves, with a preference for:
• Comparative topics where archival collections from different countries are used and compared (e.g., women lives in rural villages in the 16th century in Sweden, Malta, and Portugal or the revolutions of 1848 as narrated in archival collections from Hungary, Denmark, and France);
• International topics (e.g., the correspondence of the nobility across Europe during the Napoleonic wars);
• Topics where archival collections are used to show new points of view (e.g., the unification of Italy and Germany analysed through Spanish archives).
We will pay a lump sum of €5,000 each for up to two completed classes that have been run at least once at a school or with teachers of the applicant’s choice (primary, lower or higher secondary education). Applicants will be asked to sketch out and, if successful, develop further their intended educational approach (e.g. how teachers and students would use the archival materials, examples for exercises based on archival materials, a draft outline of the intended class(es)), and provide information about the age range of students they intend to address and their relationship to the school(s) or teacher(s) they intend to work with.
General aspects
Next to the project funds, successful applicants will also enjoy in-kind support in their activities from APE and its network, for up to 20 hours in total during 2026, with support on archival research, background information, gaining access to APE’s eLearning platform (for applicants in category 1), and/or other kind of help needed for their projects.
The project funds assists primarily with working hours incurred in the undertaking of project activities, but can, where applicable and pending approval during the application review process, also cover some travel, accommodation, or other expenses as part of research activities (especially for applicants in category 2).
The deadline for applications is Friday, 27 February 2026.

Outputs
Upon having signed the project agreement, we will pay the recipients half of the lump sum to cover initial expenses. If applicable - and if not covered anymore by that prefinancing - any expenses for travels and accommodation or other costs will be reimbursed based on individual invoices and up to three quarters of the grant sum maximum.
Any remaining amount of the grant (at least one quarter of the grant sum) will be paid upon submission of the required outputs on part of the grant recipient, which is expected no later than 20 December 2026:
For Category 1:
• A completed, tested and approved eLearning course in APE’s eLearning platform based on an existing manual or guide;
• An online or blended mode presentation of the project work not later than 11 December 2026
• A short blog post (800 to 1,000 words) describing the project activities and current as well as, where applicable, future expected outcomes and uses of the results, to be submitted by 11 December 2026;
For Category 2:
• A completed class that has been run at least once at a school or with teachers of the applicant’s choice plus a final copy of the materials produced and used during this class, which will remain with APE and be shared with APE under a CC BY-SA licence;
• An online or blended mode presentation of the project work not later than 11 December 2026
• A short blog post (800 to 1,000 words) describing the project activities and current as well as, where applicable, future expected outcomes and uses of the results, to be submitted by 11 December 2026;
Please note that Archives Portal Europe should be mentioned on all drafts and working copies of the materials, as well as in any publication about the project undertaken by the successful applicants or their colleagues.
