The golden helmet from Coțofenești
One year ago, in the night between the 24th and 25th January 2025, the golden helmet from Coțofenești (pronunciation: koh-tso-feh-NES-tee), modern Romania, a work of Getic art dated to the 5th–4th centuries BCE, and of three Dacian gold bracelets from the second half of the 1st century BCE, were stolen from the Drents Museum in Assen, the Netherlands. On this occasion, let us return to the beginning, to the moment of its discovery and the path by which it entered Romania’s cultural patrimony. So how did the Golden Helmet of Coțofenești become part of Romania’s national heritage? In the National Archives of Romania are preserved the documents through which this ‘piece of extraordinary archaeological and historical value,’ as described by archaeologists and historians, came into the ownership of the Romanian state. The story of the helmet lives on the pages of the contemporary press, at the time of its discovery in 1929. So let’s find out!
The story of the discovery
The helmet (which took its name from the place of its discovery—Coțofenești, in Prahova County) was discovered purely by chance by a boy, on the banks of the Slănic River. The child’s father, Alexandru Simion, a former comrade-in-arms from the First World War of the I. Marinescu-Moreanu – a merchant, sold it to him for 35,000 lei (the value of 350 grams of gold in 1929). Aware of the cultural significance of the golden helmet, the buyer - “with a friendly and natural simplicity”- as documents say - brought it to the Ministry of Cult and Art in order to donate it to the Romanian state. The first expert assessment was carried out by Professor Ioan Andrieșescu, archaeologist and Director General of the Museum of Antiquities, who confirmed its historical value and included it in the museum’s collections.
5 August 1929, Bucharest. Report submitted by Ioan Andrieșescu, Director of the Museum of Antiquities, to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Arts, containing proposals to grant the sum of 35,000 lei to the donor of the helmet, Ion Marinescu-Moreanu, and 15,000 lei to the villager Alexandru Simion of Coțofenești, Prahova.
Although Ion Marinescu-Moreanu’s gesture was entirely devoid of any profit motive, in the autumn of the same year he was compensated by the Museum of Antiquities with the same sum he had initially paid to his camarade (father of the lucky boy). In addition, at his insistence, the villager Alexandru Simion - described as “a very poor man”- was granted an additional 15,000 lei by the Ministry, from a total budget of 100,000 lei allocated for this purpose. The remaining 50,000 lei were to be used, at Ion Marinescu-Moreanu’s suggestion, for the manufacture of a special display case in which the artifact would be exhibited at the Museum of Antiquities.
This is how the presentation of the helmet at the Ministry of Cult and Art was described in the press of 1929:
”Painters, sculptors, writers, musicians - renowned and unknown alike - gather around. From the yellowed pages a marvel suddenly appears: the golden helmet. The murmurs fade, smiles grow still. Each person, guided by an artist’s instinct, senses its value. Everyone wants to touch it, to feel it, to see it. Imagine a cone-shaped form of thin gold sheet, covered with delicate spiral motifs, lightly embossed across its surface. Plates of the same metal extend to protect the ears and the nape, decorated with finely modeled reliefs showing riders on chimeras, daggers raised in their hands. At the front, a striking motif of stylized eyes completes the piece.”
Begun poorly but ending well - thanks above all to the honesty and the quiet sense of duty shown by a simple man, a merchant by profession, the story of the rescue of the Coțofenești helmet may help us, even after a year, to preserve our confidence that one day it will be recovered for the national and world heritage.
