Our Content Provider the UK National Archives (TNA) has created a "Rapid response collecting guidance" to help archivists, particularly with an institutional function, how to react to unprecedented and unforeseen events and situations, and whether to act as collectors of material related to "special times" of different types. Country-level accidents, natural disasters, or protests create new, sensitive documentation that is extremely relevant in their (sometimes very long) aftermaths. Documents include special communication, objects left by members of the public (eg, a public funeral), and other items of potentially great historical (or legal!) relevance.
The staff at TNA wrote this guidebook to help decide when the archivist should step in and actively collect; and how to deal with these very special collections.
