We are delighted to announce our partnership with the first Content Provider from Brazil in Archives Portal Europe, the MAG Seguros Memory Center, the archives of the first Brazilian social security institution with an official and organized legal basis, established in 1835 as Montepio Geral de Economia dos Servidores do Estado and still active today.
The collection of the Board Meeting Minutes (1835-1977) is composed of 43 books, mostly handwritten, containing the Minutes of the Montepio Meetings available – handwritten documents that documenting 142 years of activities of the first mutual pension institution in the Americas.
The collection is recognized by UNESCO as Memory of the World Brazil and Memory of the World Latin America and the Caribbean, representing the oldest and most complete set of primary records identified detailing the daily operation of a social protection system.
The minutes record everything from administrative decisions to pioneering initiatives that predated international practices, such as the implementation of payroll deductions, the creation of prison assistance benefits, and the inclusion of women as system participants.
In addition to its value for the history of social security, the collection serves as a primary source for research in economics, daily life history, public service, and genealogy, also revealing the presence of hundreds of Brazilian historical personalities who were part of the institution.
