The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) is recruiting an Archival Intern for the operational processing of a fund. Deadline for applications: 11 October 2020.
BIPM is one of the oldest international organizations with its headquarters in France. Established by the Meter Convention, signed in Paris on May 20, 1875 by the plenipotentiaries of seventeen states, the BIPM is located in the Domaine national de Saint Cloud in Sèvres on a historic site: the Pavillon de Breteuil.
The BIPM is the organization whose Member States act in common on all matters relating to scientific metrology. It is the guarantor of the global measurement system and its traceability to the International System of Units (SI). The BIPM currently has 62 Member States and 40 States and associated economic entities.The documentary fund of the BIPM consists of around 300 linear meters of archives since 1870, to which are added the collections of publications and a photographic fund. The BIPM wishes to preserve and promote this heritage which needs to be collected, structured and conserved in optimal conditions. The mission will consist of putting in place the conditions for preserving this fund.The BIPM is looking for an intern to initiate the processing of its historical archives. The intern archivist will work under the supervision of the Head of the Executive and Meetings Department, personal assistant to the director and doctoral student in the history of science. The intern will benefit from the advice and expertise of professionals from the National Archives, and will thus ensure the definition of the project to create the archives function within the organization and initiate its implementation.
Description of the mission:
- Define a reorganization plan for the various rooms;
- Define the methods of treatment, identification, description and management of the historical archive collection;
- Contribute to drafting the procedures to be implemented;
- Define the material conditions of conservation: identification of funds, dusting and packaging of documents, identification of documents to be restored.
- The secondary mission is to initiate the processing of funds according to the action plan defined beforehand: identify documents, draft and make available the appropriate research tool (s) for members of the organization and researchers.
Required profile :
- Master 1 or Master 2 student in archival science: a good knowledge of techniques, procedures and standards for processing paper, digital and photographic archives.
- You are autonomous, responsible, rigorous and reliable.
- You have writing and oral fluency, are organized and know how to plan your work.
- You are interested in the history of science and technology.
- You have the ability to work in a multicultural environment and to maintain good working relations inside and outside the BIPM.
