Our mighty ambassadors Anna Batzeli and Luke Davis presented at the conference for the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union. Here they tell us what they did! For a quick overview of the Universal Postal Union in APE, you can click here
On 1-2 February 2024, we were fortunate to represent Archives Portal Europe at a historians’ colloquium commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union in Berne, Switzerland. This was a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the portal and its usefulness in aiding historical research.
After a presentation demonstrating the search tool and displaying the range of collections relating to the UPU which can be found on APE, we answered questions in a Q&A panel session about how the website can be used by researchers. We shared our workshop with Dr. Bob Reinalda, who spoke about his project researching the Directors of the UPU as part of his role editing the IO BIO, the Biographical Dictionary of Secretaries-General of International Organizations.
It was really interesting to exchange views on the importance of historical research and how it can be facilitated, as well as the challenges faced by the archives of an international organisation such as the UPU. There were also many other presentations over the course of the two days covering a wide range of topics relating to postal history from across the world, and it was great to learn about such fascinating areas of research. The event was a really valuable and rewarding experience, both from the point of view of spreading the word about APE and also learning more about the UPU, an international organisation with a long and history but which so often goes unnoticed.
Our thanks go to the organisers of the colloquium for putting together such a varied and engaging programme, and for giving us the opportunity to participate!
