Brijuni has been declared a national park in 1983. and streches on 33,9 square kilometers.

The Brijuni Islands, all fourtheen of them, were created by separating from what used to be the landmass of the Istrian peninsula. One can look at them as a timeline. On Brijuni Islands one can find dinosaur prints, Roman villas from Vespasian time and touristic villas from the end of the 19th century. Brijuni became popular touristic place thanks to Paul Koplwieser, who bought them at 1893. and arranged nature the way it fitted him. Royals and all kind of elites spent their holidays on Brijuni for more than one hundred years.

The flora is mostly of a Mediterranean character, with six hundred indigenous and eighty allochtonous species. The fauna consists of fallow deer, mouflon, peacocks and rabbits walking around islands. In 1987. a safari was established in the park. So today we can also see elephant, zebras, llamas and similar exotic species walking next to indigenous sheep, goats, donkeys and Istrian cattle. Most of the national park, 80% of it, makes the sea, in which we can find a lot of marine endemic and protected species such as sea turtles and dolphins.

Statesmen, celebrities and tourists can´t resist the magic of National park Brijuni where they can enjoy in harmony of flora, fauna and cultural heritage.

The Kornati islands were declared a national park in 1980 and cover 217 square kilometers. Name Kornati comes from latin word corona which means the crown. Irish writer George Bernard Shaw said that God made Kornati from tears, stars and breath as the crown of His Creation. National park consist of 89 islands with total area of 50 kilometers, which means that ¾ of park surface is sea. All islands, including largest named Kornati are in private possession. Ilirian tribes inhabited islands, Romans had outbuildings there, and locals feed their sheep and cattle for centuries on karst. They left us stone cottages, churches and dry stone walls in legacy. This is not surprising, because islands are full in karst phenomena and caves. There is not much flora or fauna in this national park. One can find just birds and martens on surface, but as it was said, sea makes up most of the park. There is plenty fish and corals in the sea, which means that the water area has been preserved. That also means that biodiversity is ensured. As has been said, Kornati are truly the crown of our beautiful coast.

The Krka waterfalls were declared a national park in 1985 and stretch on 109 square kilometers. It consists of seven waterfalls. The most visited are Roški slap and Skradinski buk. The river Krka occupies 72 kilometers of the national park and for the most part consists of lakes. During her path Krka River opens into the Visovac Lake. In the middle of Visovac Lake there is a small Island of the same name with a Church and a Monastery built in 14th century. Also, in National park one can find neolithic caves, “Hollow Churches” or arcs made of stone from Roman times, Orthodox Christian Monastery from 15th century and 16th century fortress. It is important to say that the second oldest hydroelectric power plant in the world is located on Krka waterfalls, put into operation 28th of August 1895 thanks to Nikola Tesla. This National park is also attractive ethnographic locality of the Dalmatian hinterland. Krka National Park is important not only because it tells the story of human history but also because of its natural beauty and diversity. It is rich in mostly Mediterranean flora and fauna with fourteen endemic species including proteus. In National park Krka beauty and force of nature are in collaboration with local people, providing them food and life.

The Northwestern part of the island of Mljet was declared a national park in 1960 and covers 53,7 square kilometers of land and sea. Mljet is a green island. The Ogygia of Homer’s Odyssey. Homer mentions the magical island of the nymph Calypso with its green forests with four springs, each of which flows to its own side. Mljet truly is the green island full of oak and pine forests spread all over it. The unique flora and fauna inhabits Mljet. Island is full of endemic species, and the quality and purity of the sea is indicated by the fact that 150 species of shellfish live in it. Four springs Homer was talking about? They truly exist. The passage that enters the island, the Soline canal, lets the sea water into the island’s first larger lake, Veliko jezero. The water of this lake flows thorough an even narrower channel into another smaller lake, Malo jezero. In the Soline canal, the water between the sea and the island’s sea lakes is constantly changing and is formed into a stream that changes its direction every six hours, depending on the change of tides. On the island, in the middle of a large lake, there is a Church and a Monastery from 12th century. Also, in National park one can find a complex of a Roman palace from the 5th century and Odyssey´s cave. Legend says that in that cave Calypso held Odyssey while he was on Ogygia. The island has been inhabited for 4000 years. Mljet is a national park full of magical beauty and everyone who sees it begins to believe that nymphs and heroes have really visited it.

Paklenica was declared a national park in 1949 and it stretches over 95 square kilometers. The canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica are cut into the slopes of the Velebit mountain and are ideal for climbing, which has been recognized by sport fans from all over the world. The canyons were formed by the melting of glaciers from Velebit highest peaks at the end of the ice age. In the national park is also located the highest peak of the Velebit mountain, Vaganjski vrh, 1757 meters high. Rock sculptures, forests, meadows and caves are full of diverse flora and fauna. The national park is full of chamois, bears, wolves, lynxes, eagles and black pine virgin forest. There is a lot of endemic species in Paklenica, and 115 spelealogical sites. Although people occasionally inhabited the park area, no one has lived there since the end of World War II. Therefore, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the wilderness of Paklenica.

Plitvice lakes were declared a national park in 1949 and are the oldest Croatian national park. They cover 296,8 square kilometers. The Plitvice Lakes area became part of the UNESCO World Heritage List at 1979. Sixteen lakes are connected by cascades that create many waterfalls. Black, White, Matica and Korana River with Plitvice creek provide all the water in the park. Legend says that Barbara Celjska, in Croatia known as the Black queen, created Plitvice in 15th century but according to science lakes are 12 to 15000 years old and they are still changing. And the reason why they are changing lies in tufa. Tufa are calcium carbonate formations that are deposited in the form of small crystals at the bottom of the lake, on lake plants and lake barriers, and their growth enables lake changes. But this is not the only fascinating thing about this national park. Flora is extremely well preserved so there are eleven forest communities in Plitvice, fir-beech virgin forest and over 60 species of orchids. One can meet brown bear, wolf, otter and freshwater fishes and crabs. The locals live in the area of the national park and enjoy its amazing nature and landscape.

Risnjak was declared a national park in 1953. It streches on 63,5 square kilometers. Name Risnjak comes from croatian word „ris“ which means lynx. The indigenous lynx was extinct at the beginning of the 20th century. A small number of lynx present today came to Risnjak from the neighboring Slovenian mountains. On Risnjak we can also find wolves, brown bears, wild cats, chamois, 144 bird and 89 butterfly species. There are 14 forest and 30 plant communities in the national park, among which beech and fir forests stand out. There are also 1148 flora species including protected species such as edelweiss. The Risnjak and Snježnik mountain massifs are excellent places from which to observe the area of Gorski kotar, the Kvarner Bay and the Slovenian Alps. In this national park we find another gem, the river Kupa. Since 1963, spring of the river Kupa and its surrounding area have the status of a protected area. At an altitude of 321 meters there is a turquise blue lake from which Kupa River springs. In the park can be found prehistoric caves as well as the local houses. Not many people live in this national park, only 20 of them. But they live as one with this breathtaking nature.

Archives Portal Europe help guide

Please select amongst the relevant tips we can help with. If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will be in touch as soon as possible.

Starting your search here will include all content available in Archives Portal Europe. Simply enter your keyword(s) and hit the search button. Wrap fixed expressions in quotation marks, e.g. “French Revolution”. Check the box to “Search each term separately” in case you are looking for documents containing at least one word, but not necessarily all keywords; this will also allow you to search for the same term in multiple languages at the same time (e.g. “French Revolution” “Révolution Française”). You can also use wildcards - find more about Research Tools here. If you would like to use more specific settings, try our Advanced search

The additional advanced search options give you the possibility to focus your search in:

  • archival documents (Search in archives),
  • names of person and organisations that created, worked with and maintained these documents (Search in names),
  • Institutions currently holding the documents (Search in institutions).

When searching with multiple terms at the same time, wrap fixed expressions in quotation marks (e.g. "French Revolution"), or check the box "Search each term separately" in case you are looking for either one term of the other. This will also allow you to search for the same term in multiple languages (e.g. "French Revolution" "Révolution française"). You can also choose one of the suggestions matching your search term once you start typing.

This will only show results that include documents that have been digitised and are available online

Use this option to search only one or more keywords, rather than all of them

Select where your search terms should appear specifically inside the archival description:

  • Title: search terms will appear in the title, or name, of the description
  • Content Summary: search terms will appear in the main description of the document or of the collection
  • Reference code: it is the identifier of the archival material as provided by the institution. Use this option if you know the exact reference code of the material you are looking for

You can filter results by selecting where your search terms appears specifically inside the archival description:

  • The name can be the full name of a person, family or organisation as well as only parts of it, e.g. only the last name.
  • The identifier is used internally by the institution or refers to (inter)national vocabularies such as the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF).
  • The place can be the place of birth (or foundation), the place of death (or closing), the place of work or any other place of importance.
  • The occupation is the profession or job of a person.
  • The mandate is a law, directive or charter that establishes and defines an organisation's powers, functions, responsibilities or sphere of activities.
  • The function is an activity, role, or purpose performed or manifested by a person, family or organisation.
