Thomas, Antoine Juste Alphonse (1804-1886)
Antoine Juste Alphonse Thomas est né le 22 thermidor an XII (10 août 1804), à Paris. Il meurt le 18 octobre 1886 et est inhumé au cimetière du Père-Lachaise (36e division, allée des Acacias, première ligne). Le dernier acte qu'il reçoit est daté du 11 octobre 1886.
Il épouse Lise Collinet.
Il est fait chevalier de la Légion d'honneur le 5 février 1873, officier le 14 août 1883 (LH/2596/57).
Thomas fut notaire pendant plus de 55 ans, de la Monarchie de Juillet à la IIIe République. Son dossier de nomination est daté du 6 décembre 1831 (BB/10/846). Son étude, installée dans des quartiers alors en plein développement, d'abord rue Gaillon puis rue Neuve-Saint-Augustin (1835) et enfin rue Bleue (1843), comprend peu de célébrités, mais est prospère, sans être l'une des plus actives de la capitale.
On peut se faire une idée de sa clientèle, car 30 années de son activité ont été analysées pièce à pièce. Elle est nombreuse en employés, marchands, négociants, agents de change, modistes, hommes de presse..., aux alentours de la rue Gaillon, de la rue Neuve-Saint-Augustin (devenue rue Daunou et rue Saint-Augustin), de la rue de La Michodière, de la rue de Port-Mahon, de la rue de Ménars, de la rue d'Antin, de la rue Neuve-des-Mathurins, puis de la rue Bleue (autrefois rue d'Enfer), de la rue Riboutté, de la rue Bergère, mais aussi jusqu'au Marais ou plus au Nord et à l'Ouest de Paris vers les Batignolles-Monceau. On y trouve le comte de La Tour d'Auverge-Lauraguais, des membres de la famille commerçante bordelaise des Gradis, le peintre Devéria, la succession de Prosper Mérimée, un certain nombre de photographes ou de journalistes et, parmi les personnes morales, la Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques. Il est aussi le notaire de François Joseph Defontaine, citoyen belge, dont la fille épouse Edmond Louis Amand Du Sommerard, conservateur du musée des thermes et de l'hôtel de Cluny.
Antoine Juste Alphonse Thomas fut onze fois président de la chambre des notaires de Paris. En 1852, déjà président de chambre, il prononce un discours en hommage à Louis Auguste Lahure, son confrère, devant la tombe de ce dernier, en terminant par ces mots qui montrent qu'il a été au moins en partie, formé par lui "(...)Pourquoi faut-il que par un sort bien triste et bien doux tout à la fois, il ait été donné de les exprimer à son plus jeune, à son dernier élève, qui, depuis plus de trente années lui portait une amitié respectueuse et vraiment filiale." (https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb314599168). C'est d'ailleurs Thomas qui a lancé les travaux du bâtiment de la Place du Châtelet qui abrite encore aujourd'hui la chambre. Il est aussi l'un de ces professionnels qui s'est particulièrement intéressé à l'activité de ses prédécesseurs. On lui doit surtout le "Thomas", c'est-à-dire, sous le nom deNotariats du département de la Seine, paru en 1862, la suite - corrections et mises à jour - du recueil réalisé au XVIIIe siècle par Me Toussaint Delarue intituléRegistre des offices et pratiques des conseillers du roi notaires, gardes-notes et gardes-scel de Sa Majesté au châtelet de Paris, précédé de la liste des cent treize notaires en exercice au 1er janvier 1786 et suivi d'une table alphabétique, paru aux dépens de la Compagnie des notaires en 1786 (https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb31459917m). C'est dans le "Thomas", paru en 1862, que figure pour la première fois le cadre de classement adopté en 1928-1932 par le Minutier central en cours de fondation, à savoir la liste des 122 études, chacune désignée par un chiffre romain. La numérotation donnait le numéro I au titulaire de l'étude alors le plus ancien en fonction en 1860. Les travaux de Delarue et Thomas donnent la concordance entre les noms des notaires et les études renfermant leurs minutes. Ils ont servi de base à l'établissement de la liste des notaires parisiens par le Minutier central et à leurs successions, tant à la tête des offices qu'à celle des "pratiques" ou minutiers. C'est donc à partir d'eux qu'ont été rédigés tant la première liste des "producteurs", au sens archivistique du terme que sont les notaires, que le premier état des fonds pour chacune des 122 études historiques de la capitale en 1860.
Est-ce pour ce goût des archives et de leur classement que, parmi les clients de Me Thomas, figurait Louis Rondonneau (1759-1834), lequel, fondateur du "Dépôt des lois", en 1793, par rachat du dépôt de l'imprimerie Prault, puis bibliothécaire adjoint au Conseil d'Etat, confia aux Archives nationales sa monumentale collection d'imprimés ?
Personnalité marquante du notariat parisien au XIXe siècle, la figure de Thomas nous est bien connue par le portrait de lui qui est conservé dans les pièces de réception de la chambre. Il y est représenté alors qu'il était doyen de sa compagnie, dans la tenue officielle qu'il avait lui-même imposée à ses confrères, une tenue inspirée de celle du tiers état. Salmon réalisa une gravure d'après ce portrait officiel, commandé par délibération de la chambre du 1er mai 1876 (portrait d'après Pierre Auguste Cot, 1877, peintre et graveur). Cette dernière fut envoyée dédicacée par Thomas à bon nombre de ses confrères.
Thomas laisse aussi un récit de vie, intitulée "Vie d'un notaire. Allocution intime prononcée dans la séance de clôture de la chambre des notaires du 13 mai 1875", quand Thomas quitte ses responsabilités de président, récit qui représente tout de même une plaquette de 183 pages, parue en 1875 (https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb31459918z)
