L’ENSAD est un établissement public national à caractère administratif créé par décret n° 84-969 du 26 octobre 1984 et placé sous la tutelle du ministère de la Culture.

Elle a pour mission la formation artistique, scientifique et technique d'étudiants aptes à concevoir, promouvoir, développer toute réalisation dans les diverses disciplines des arts décoratifs ainsi que la conduite et la valorisation de la recherche dans ces disciplines.

Le cursus d'études s'étend sur 5 années et conduit au diplôme d'État de l'ENSAD.

Les trois premières années s’organisent autour de l’acquisition des basiques et des fondamentaux ainsi que l’initiation à un projet. Les deux dernières années sont quant à elles, celles de l’approfondissement, du développement du projet et de l’initiation à la recherche.

Alors que la première année est commune à tous les élèves et s’articule principalement autour d’enseignements artistiques et théoriques généraux (dessin, peinture, sculpture, histoire des arts, esthétique, droit, nouvelles technologies, langues étrangères), la deuxième année est marquée par le choix de la spécialisation (architecture intérieure, Art-Espace, cinéma d’animation, design graphique/multimédia, design objet, design textile et matière, design vêtement, image imprimée, photo/vidéo, scénographie).

En quatrième année, intervient la rédaction d’un mémoire et le cas échéant, la mobilité académique à l’étranger.

Enfin, la cinquième année est consacrée au Grand projet (projet de diplôme).

Un stage professionnel obligatoire d’au moins trois mois doit être effectué durant le cursus.

HISTORICAL NOTE

Historical note:

Les origines (1767-1877)

L'École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) a pour origine l’École royale gratuite de dessin fondée en 1766 par Jean-Jacques Bachelier (1724-1806). Elle est ouverte officiellement en 1767 par lettres patentes du roi Louis XV. Le but de son promoteur était de développer les métiers relatifs aux arts et d’accroître ainsi la qualité des produits de l’industrie. À travers l’apprentissage rigoureux et exigeant du dessin, l’école s’appliquait à associer métier et culture, intelligence et sensibilité, pour que les meilleurs artisans deviennent des artistes créateurs.

Le dessin à la base de la formation, comprenant géométrie, figure et ornement, en opposition à l’abus du pittoresque de l’époque, visait à « rendre la précision familière ».

Sa mission initiale s’est affinée en même temps que son ambition s’est affirmée.

L'école nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs (1877-)

Après plusieurs changements d’appellation, l’école devient en 1877 l’École nationale des Arts décoratifs puis, en 1925, l’École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.

À partir des années 1930, elle couvre de nouveaux domaines, en particulier les arts graphiques (Cassandre crée en 1932 un cours libre sur l’affiche publicitaire).

Après-guerre, l’enseignement se recentre sous l’impulsion de son directeur, Léon Moussinac, autour de l’architecture intérieure.

En 1962, son successeur, Jacques Adnet, fait appel à Roger Tallon pour mettre en place ce qui s’appelait encore l’« esthétique industrielle » et qui va s’imposer comme le premier enseignement en France du design industriel.

En 1966, Jean Widmer apporte le même bouleversement dans les arts graphiques qui deviennent la communication visuelle.

La fin des années 1960 et le début des années 1970 voient d’autres bouleversements. Sous la direction de Michel Tourlière, de nombreuses disciplines prennent une nouvelle importance tandis que d’autres apparaissent : design vêtement, textile, photo, scénographie, vidéo, mobilier et infographie. La pédagogie se fait plus réflexive et expérimentale.

Entre 1990 et 2002, Richard Peduzzi, scénographe et créateur de mobilier, dirige l’ENSAD. L’établissement anticipe la révolution informatique et compte parmi les toutes premières écoles d’art à intégrer le multimédia dans son enseignement. L’École renforce une approche professionnelle à travers treize secteurs de spécialisation et développe son ouverture à l’international en nouant des liens avec des établissements étrangers comparables.

À la rentrée de 2004-2005, sous la direction de Patrick Raynaud, artiste plasticien et ancien directeur des écoles d’art de Nantes et de Cergy, l’ENSAD ouvre un nouveau chapitre de son histoire avec un cursus de 5 ans, des locaux rénovés (Luc Arsène-Henry et Philippe Starck, architectes ; Pascal Cribier, paysagiste) et une nouvelle identité visuelle (M/M [Paris]).

En 2010, la réforme pédagogique destinée à inscrire l’École dans le cadre de l’harmonisation européenne des cursus de l’enseignement supérieur (LMD), est consacrée par l’obtention du grade de master.

En 2011, l’École devient membre du PRES (pôle de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur) Paris Sciences et Lettres. Puis s’ensuit en 2012 la mise en place du doctorat SACRe (Sciences, Arts, Création, Recherche), sous l’égide de la directrice de l’époque, Geneviève Gallot, en coopération avec cinq autres établissements : l’École Normale Supérieure, l’École des Beaux-Arts, le Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique, le Conservatoire national supérieur de la musique et de la danse de Paris et l'École nationale supérieure des métiers de l’image et du son (FEMIS).

C’est en 2012 également que l’ENSAD intègre la Conférence des Grandes Écoles, sanctionnant ainsi son rang de grand établissement public d’enseignement supérieur.

  • The name can be the full name of a person, family or organisation as well as only parts of it, e.g. only the last name.
  • The identifier is used internally by the institution or refers to (inter)national vocabularies such as the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF).

  • The occupation is the profession or job of a person.

Please note that this filter will only include institutions, for which a type has been provided as part of their descriptions:

  • A business archive holds the records of (often) commercial organisations.
  • A church or religious archive holds the records of church parishes or religious organisations, e.g. birth or death registers.
  • A county or local authority archive holds the records of the county's administrative bodies.
  • A media archive holds audiovisual or sound records, e.g. a film archive or the archive of a broadcasting company.

  • Full dates includes normalised date information available for date-based searches. It is recommended to combine this selection with the filters "Start timespan" and "End timespan" for more details.
  • Only descriptive dates provides the date information in human-readable format.
  • No date either includes documents where the creation date is unknown, or where date information is not in a machine-readable format
