What to expect from the new EAG
Following the release of EAC-CPF 2.0, the new version of EAG, EAG 3.0, will include various changes that align the standard more with the two standards for encoding descriptions of archival materials (EAD) and for encoding descriptions of those corporate bodies, persons, and families who created, used and maintained the archival materials (EAC-CPF). Apart from the introduction of a series of optional attributes, e.g. to link to external vocabularies or to reference other parts of the same description more easily, the most significant changes will cover:
- Adopted EAC-CPF’s approach to encoding names
- Names are now encoded with one general element (<nameEntry>) that can contain several <part>-s
- Distinction between official and alternative names is done via attributes
- It is possible to select a preferred name (rather than specifying names that are not preferred anymore)
- Names of the same type can be grouped together
- More options to include links to existing information (e.g. from an institution’s website)
- Links can now be included in a broad array of elements, hopefully also making an aggregator’s work easier
- Access in general as well as conditions of access and conditions of use specifically
- Opening and closing times
- Accessibility information
- History of the archives building
- All services offered
- New values for repository type and option to include your own
- New set of values includes
- National archives, Regional archives, Local archives, Specialised government archives, Specialised non-governmental archives, Business archives, Personal and family archives, Religious institution archives, University archives, Non-university education archives, International archives, Community archives
- Additionally you can add your own (either translations or variations of the above)
- Option to includes subject headings for holdings
- To emphasise specific topics or types of materials or persons, corporate bodies, or families or places
- Option to include extent for digital holdings
