Draft capitulation of the French in Gozo
Languages: Italian; Scope and contents: The French occupied Gozo on 10 June 1798; however in September the people rose against them and besieged them within the fortified city of Gozo. On 24 October, Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson arrived on HMS Vanguard off Gozo. That same evening, Archpriest Saverio Cassar, the leader of the insurrection, had a meeting with Nelson, during which it was agreed to demand the capitulation of the French upon certain conditions. The French capitulated on 28 October and, on the following day, the British handed over the island to the Gozitans ushering in a short period of autonomy.
