The Photography Network’s virtual symposium will take place from 12-14 October 2023, hosted jointly with the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. The focus will be the subject of frameworks in the study of philosophy, to celebrate the UWC’s New Archival Visions Programme.
The symposium will consider how photographs have been shaped and continue to be shaped both in circulation and in archival repositories. Proposals are invited which consider critical approaches to frameworks, a term which has become a buzzword for describing new approaches to the study of photography and which is intended to be capacious and inclusive.
Potential approaches may include archival; colonial, postcolonial and decolonial; cultural; dysfunctional; and ethical.
A variety of presentational styles is encouraged, including 20-minute papers as well as alternative-format presentations such as workshops are roundtables. There will also be a Lightning Round for new research on any topic from students, curators, academics, and practitioners.
The deadline for applications is 15th June. For more information on how to apply, please visit https://www.photographynetwork.net/news/2023-pn-call-for-papers.
