1964
Kaarel Robert Pusta sündis 1. märtsil (17. veebr) 1883. aastal Narvas Elias ja Loviisa Pusta (sünd Blumberg) pojana. Varsti pärast poja sündi siirdus perekond elama Tartusse, hiljem aga Harjumaale Kehrasse, kus Elias Pusta asus raudteeteenistusse.
Alghariduse omandas K. R. Pusta vallakoolis ja Tallinna linna algkoolis. 1896-1899 õppis Tallinna 4-klassilises Linnakoolis. Kuna isal polnud võimalust poja edasikoolitamiseks, valmistus K. R. Pusta pedagoogikakursustel koduõpetaja kutsele ja ühtlasi ka eksternaadi korras keskkooli lõpueksamite sooritamiseks.
Põrandaalusest revolutsioonilisest tegevusest osavõtu tõttu vangistati ta 1903. aastal kuueks kuuks ja jäeti hiljem politsei valve alla. 1904. aastal põgenes K. R. Pusta välismaale, elades Saksamaal, Prantsusmaal ja Šveitsis. Emigratsioonis olles täiendas ta oma haridust vabakuulajana Pariisi Kovalevski Vabaülikoolis ja Berni Ülikoolis. Ka saatis ta sealt kaastöid kodumaa ajalehtedele Felixi varjunime all.
1906. aastal pöördus ta kodumaale tagasi ja asus algul elama Tartusse, hiljem Tallinnasse, kus töötas ajalehe Virulane toimetuses.
1907. aastal abiellus K. R. Pusta Ulrike Grünbergiga.
1908. aastal said Tallinna sandarmid K. R. Pusta endisest revolutsioonilisest tegevusest teada ja teda ähvardas järjekordne arreteerimine. Seetõttu põgenes ta Peterburi, kus teenis raamatupidaja ja pangaametnikuna. 1911. a Tallinnasse naasmise järel töötas ta Päevalehe toimetuses.
1914. aastal ostis K. R. Pusta Tallinnas Laamanni trükikoja ja kavatses hakata välja andma oma ajalehte. 1915. a kutsuti ta aga sõjaväeteenistusse, kus teenis kuni 1917. aastani sõjaväeametnikuna Poolas ja Kaukaasias. 1917. aasta sügisel peale kodumaale jõudmist töötas K. R. Pusta toitlusinspektorina Eestimaa Toitlusvalitsuses.
1918. a jaanuaris määras Maanõukogu Vanematekogu K. R. Pusta Eesti Välisdelegatsiooni koosseisu. Eesti esindajate ülesandeks oli nõuda Eesti iseseisvuse tunnustamist välisriikide poolt. Pusta asukohaks oli määratud Pariis, kuid ta viibis 1918. ja 1919. aastal ka Londonis ja Roomas.
Saavutanud 13. mail 1918. a Eesti iseseisvuse tunnustamise de facto Prantsusmaa valitsuse poolt, jäi K. R. Pusta Eesti Ajutise Valitsuse diplomaatiliseks esindajaks Pariisi. Ta hakkas seal välja andma ajakirja Bulletin de L´Esthonie, mille ülesandeks oli Eesti iseseisvuse propageerimine välismaa poliitilistes ringkondades.
K. R. Pusta ametlik määramine Eesti esindajaks Pariisi toimus Vabariigi Valitsuse poolt 1919. aasta 2. novembri otsusega, mis jõustus 25. veebruaril 1918. aastal.
Täieõiguslikuks saadikuks Prantsusmaale ja Itaaliasse määrati ta 1921. aasta 28. veebruaril pärast Eesti Vabariigi tunnustamist de jure. Sama aasta 16. märtsil määrati ta ühtlasi asjuriks Belgia valitsuse juurde.
11. aprillil 1923. aastal lahkus K. R. Pusta Itaalia saadiku kohalt.
Välisministri käskkirjaga 17.detsembrist 1923 akrediteeriti Pusta Belgia valitsuse juurde erakorralise saadikuna.
26. juunist 1924. aastal kuni 7. oktoobrini 1925. aastal oli ta Eesti Vabariigi välisministriks. Sellelt kohalt vabanenuna asus ta uuesti Prantsusmaa saadiku kohale (ERA.957.8.1895, l.1-3).
Välisministri käskkirjaga 1927. aasta 21. maist nimetati Pusta peakonsuliks Prantsusmaale ja Belgiasse (samas, s.721, l.84).
25. mail 1928. aastal anti K. R. Pustale erakorralise saadiku volitused Hispaania valitsuse juurde.
Riigivanema käskkirjaga 31. augustist 1932 kutsuti ta ära eespoolnimetatud saadikukohtadelt ja määrati erakorraliseks saadikuks Poola, Rumeenia ja Tšehhoslovakkia valitsuse juurde.
1935. aasta 15. juulist kuni 13. detsembrini jätkus tema diplomaatiline tegevus Rootsi, Norra ja Taani valitsuste juures erakorralise saadikuna (samas, s.1895, l. 3-4).
8. detsembril 1935. a. kavatsesid vapside liikumise pooldajad Eestis läbi viia riigipöörde ja moodustada uue valitsuse, mille koosseisus oli ette nähtud ka Pusta kandidatuur. Neil asjaoludel kutsuti ta 1935. aasta 13. detsembril Tallinnasse ja peale saabumist arreteeriti. Vangistuses viibis K. R. Pusta kuni 24. maini 1936. aastal, mil Sõjaringkonnakohtu poolt õigeks mõisteti (Eesti Biograafilise Leksikoni täiendusköide, Tartu 1940, lk. 251-252; K. R. Pusta, “Saadiku Päevik”, New York 1964, lk. 230-243).
1936. aasta lõpus siirdus K. R. Pusta koos perekonnaga Pariisi ja alustas tegevust välislaenude vahendajana ning välisriikidega koostöö korraldajana välisfirmade huvides (K.R.Pusta, op. cit. lk. 259-264).
3. jaanuaril 1939. aastal esitas K. R. Pusta Eesti Vabariigi välisministrile avalduse oma ennistamiseks riigiteenistusse (ERA.957.8.1895, l.66).
Välisministri käskkirjaga 14. augustist 1939. aastast määrati ta Eesti Pariisi saatkonna juurde eriülesannetega ametnikuks ja vabastati sellelt kohalt 1. juulil 1940. aastal seoses Eesti välisesinduste likvideerimisega Prantsusmaal (samas, l. 71-74).
1940. aasta suvel kui Saksa sõjavägi lähenes Pariisile, lahkus Pusta koos abikaasaga sealt ja siirdus Portugali kaudu Ameerika Ühendriikidesse (K. R. Pusta, op. cit., lk. 282-300).
Ta elas esialgu Washingtonis, hiljem New Yorgis, organiseerides okupeeritud rahvaste koostööd.
1952. aastal siirdus K. R. Pusta Madriidi. Hilisemal eluperioodil esines ta loengutega Strassbourgi Vaba Euroopa Kolledžis, Madriidi, Istanbuli ja Ankara ülikoolides.
K. R. Pusta suri 1964. aastal Madriidis (Pro Baltica, lk. 31-39).
K. R. Pusta on eesti esindajana osa võtnud paljudest rahvusvahelistest konverentsidest (Pariisi rahukonverents, San-Remo, Barcelona, Genua konverentsid jt.).
1920-1930. aastatel võttis ta nii Eesti delegatsiooni liikme kui ka delegatsiooni juhina osa Rahvasteliidu Täiskogu istungitest. Samuti juhtis ta Eesti delegatsiooni 1920. aasta suvel Riias peetud Balti riikide konverentsil.
Diplomaatilise tegevuse kõrval oli K. R. Pusta silmapaistev ühiskonnategelane ja tegi koostööd välismaa teadusasutustega. Ta oli Pan-Euroopa liikumise keskjuhatuse liige, Rahvusvahelise Diplomaatia Akadeemia asutajaliige, 1932. aasta Haagi Rahvusvahelise Õiguse Instituudi eluaegne liige, 1938. a. Rahvusvahelise Poliitilise ning Konstitutsioonilise Ajaloo Instituudi liige (Eesti Biograafiline Leksikon, lk. 393; selle täiendusköide, lk. 251-252). 1935. a. esines ta Rahvusvahelise Õiguse Instituudis loengusarjaga Läänemere statuudi kohta.
Emigratsioonis oli K. R. Pusta Demokraatia Arendamise Komitee asutajaliige ja kuulus II Maailmasõja ajal Columbia Ülikooli juurde moodustatud Euroopa küsimuste komisjoni koosseisu.
New Yorgis elades kuulus ta Rahvusvahelise Inimõiguste Liiga juhatusse ja oli mitme rahvusvahelise õigusalase organisatsiooni ja teadusliku seltsi liige (Pro Baltica, lk. 31-39).
K. R. Pusta on avaldanud ka teaduslikke ja publitsistlikke artikleid Eesti, Prantsusmaa, Saksamaa, Poola ja Ameerika Ühendriikide ajakirjanduses ning ta on kuulnud Saksa juriidilise ajakirja “Internationales Recht und Diplomatie” toimetuse kolleegiumi. Ühendriikides valiti ta sealse Eesti Ajakirjanike Ühingu esimeheks (samas, lk. 31-39).
Hilisemas eas oli K. R. Pusta ka memuarist. Temalt on ilmunud kaks trükki memuaare “Kehra metsast maailma” (1936. a. Eestis, 1960. a. Stockholmis), “Saadiku päevik” (1964) ja “Kirjad kinnisest majast” (1966).
Eeskätt diplomaatiliste teenete eest omistati K. R. Pustale järgmised aumärgid:

K. R. Pusta elutööd on välismaal tunnustavalt hinnatud. Seal tegutses 1960. aastatel K. R. Pusta Sõprade Komitee, kuhu peale väliseestlaste kuulusid ka välisriikide esindajad. Selle organisatsiooni poolt anti 1965. aastal Stockholmis välja artiklite kogumik “Pro Baltica”, mis on pühendatud nii K. R. Pusta mälestusele kui ka Baltikumi rahvaste vabastusidee propageerimisele.
