Dino Tamburini (Trieste 1924-2001) nasce a Trieste, figlio di Bartolomeo Tamburini, legale originario di Rovigo e Aurelia Lusina, figlia di famiglia borghese triestina con radici in Dalmazia. Dopo gli studi al liceo scientifico, si iscrive al corso dell’ingegneria edile al Politecnico di Torino, da dove, a cause degli eventi bellici, si trasferisce a Padova conseguendo la laurea nel novembre del 1949 e ottenendo l’abilitazione provvisoria per esercitare la professione di ingegnere nel 1950. Dopo il rientro a Trieste fa da assistente a Umberto Nordio presso la facoltà di ingegneria, fino al 1961. Con Nordio partecipa agli interventi nel quartiere INA - Casa di Chiadino in Monte (1956-59).
Inizia l’attività professionale con un periodo di apprendistato con Vittorio Frandoli nel cantiere del seminario vescovile. Nel 1951 vince il suo primo concorso nazionale insieme all'architetto Lucio Arneri e gli ingegneri Antonio Guacci e Roberto Costa, progetto per il mercato ortofrutticolo all’ingrosso. Il mercato non viene realizzato e Tamburini insieme con Roberto Costa si concentrano sugli altri lavori, nel 1952 progettano le due case "grattacielo" in via Conti con la struttura portante realizzata interamente in calcestruzzo per conto di IACP e Governo Militare Alleato.
Dopo il progetto di via Conti, Tamburini e Costa fondano uno studio architettonico insieme, e i successivi due anni lavorano ai progetti di casa Costa e Bolaffio in via Besenghi (1951), agli edifici in via Combi (1953), alla palazzina degli uffici e nuovi ingressi alla spiaggia di Grado (Gorizia) (1952-1954), al progetto per il concorso per la sede per l’Ente Porto (1952) e ad alcuni progetti per scuole superiori a Trieste, Chiavari (Genova) e Gorizia (1953). Tamburini poi prosegue l’attività della progettazione da solo con il progetto per il condominio in via Canova (1956-1958).
Nel 1955, Dino Tamburini vince il concorso per la chiesa nel quartiere San Luigi a Trieste, propone una chiesa sobria e austera, con le volte coniche, leggermente sovrapposte, che creano un’illuminazione naturale particolare. Alle decorazioni della chiesa lavora con scultore Marcello Mascherini.
Tamburini prosegue l’attività a Grado collaborando con l'ingegnere Vigilio De Grassi (1889-1967), conosciuto in occasione della direzione dei lavori per gli ingressi alle spiagge della stessa cittadina. Insieme predispongono il Piano Regolatore di Grado nel 1958 e Piano Regolatore Particolareggiato delle zone della Sacca e della Schiusa, costruiscono le scuole a Fossalon (1959-1963) e a Schiusa, una palestra in via Vinci (1958-1962), la filiale della Cassa di Risparmio di Trieste a Grado (1958-1959) e lavorano alla sistemazione del Rione Sacca (1960-1965).
Nel 1959, già trentacinquenne crea una famiglia con Nicoletta Brunner, con lei condividerà venti anni di vita, l’educazione di quattro figli, la cura della casa a Barcola e la passione per l’arte.
All’inizio degli anni Sessanta Tamburini apre il proprio studio in via Machiavelli, 1, dove lavora con il geometra Tullio Venturini che operava per suo conto nei cantieri e Rita Caputo Schiozzi che si occupava di amministrazione e dei clienti.
Nel decennio successivo, segnato da forte sviluppo delle infrastrutture regionali e interesse per interventi edilizi di grandi dimensioni, Tamburini continua a lavorare sull’edilizia residenziale (edifici in via Salvi (1962-1966), complesso edilizio nella zona di Campo Marzio (1963). Il progetto a cui lavora con particolare entusiasmo è quello per due palazzine nel quartiere Gretta (1962-1966), per le quali disegna anche i dettagli interni, serramenti e ringhiere. Tra il 1974 e 1982 lavora sul complesso residenziale “Il Giardino” con annessa sede del centro di elaborazione dati della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia ed uffici regionali. Di questi anni sono anche i progetti di strutture industriali o per il trasporto, Tamburini nel 1962-1966 progetta e dirige lavori dell'Aerostazione turistica e della pista dell’Aeroporto di Ronchi dei Legionari e partecipa al concorso per il nuovo Aeroclub a Milano. Nel 1970 prepara anche una proposta per l’aeroporto di Genova-Sestri, ma il progetto non verrà mai considerato per il ritardo nella consegna del progetto ai committenti.
Uno dei lavori più importanti di Tamburini negli anni Sessanta è l’albergo Europa e l’annessa scuola alberghiera Le Ginestre, commissionati dall’Ente Nazionale per l'Addestramento dei Lavoratori del Commercio (ENALC) (1961-1968). Per questo progetto, Tamburini si ispira ai villaggi bianchi (los pueblos blancos) in Andalusia: disegna forme arrotondate ricoperte da intonaco bianco, arroccate sulla scogliera, a ricordare altri progetti residenziali che seguono i principi di architettura organica. L’albergo doveva sorgere sulla scogliera della Baia di Sistiana, in prossimità del mare e, data la l'instabilità del suolo, Tamburini chiede l’aiuto dell’ingegnere Silvano Zorzi (1921-1994) per l’intervento sulla struttura portante dell’edificio.
Tra 1966 e 1976 Tamburini si occupa della costruzione del nuovo edificio dell’Istituto Statale d’Arte, dedicato poi nel 1973 al suo maestro Umberto Nordio (scomparso nel 1971). Il progetto razionalista, che trae l’ispirazione nella Maison de la Culture di Le Corbusier, ricorda la sagoma di una nave per sovrapposizione di due corpi di fabbrica, ed è un lavoro decisamente insolito per Tamburini.
Nel 1982, per rispondere all'ampliamento dei propri orizzonti professionali, si laurea in architettura a IUAV di Venezia con Luciano Semerari. Alla sua attività progettuale ordinaria si aggiungono quindi interventi di ristrutturazione e recupero nei centri storici, come palazzo Muratti a Udine (1971-1977), i palazzi in piazza Tommaseo a Trieste (1979-87) per le Assicurazioni Generali, compreso lo storico Caffè Tommaseo, il palazzo in via Battisti a Trieste per Alleanza Assicurazioni (1971-75), l'Hotel de la ville di Trieste per la Banca Popolare di Novara (1975-84), fino al grande cantiere per il restauro del Teatro comunale Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste (1986-97) e al recupero del grattacielo "Aedes" (1990-93) progettato da Berlam.
Alla fine degli anni Novanta, Tamburini collabora ancora con ATER (ex IACP) sui progetti del ripristino del patrimonio edilizio popolare storico di Trieste. In via Flavia (1999-2008) l’architetto progetta e costruisce, su un lotto reso libero, uno dei palazzi a “L” con 72 alloggi e parcheggio sotterraneo. Tra il 1999 e il 2003 lavora anche sul recupero dell'isolato di Androna Aldraga (via dei Capitelli).
Negli ultimi anni progetta la ristrutturazione e il restauro del Ridotto del Teato Verdi di Trieste (2002) e la ristrutturazione della sede dello Yacht Club Adriaco di Trieste (2005).
Accanto agli interessi prettamente architettonici, molto presente nella personalità di Dino Tamburini è il gusto per iI disegno e la grafica, espresso nella sua attività di collaboratore di ditte come la Olivari, per la quale realizza un noto tipo di maniglia" ma anche nella caricatura, in cui rivela una vivace vena satirica. Sono noti i suoi ritratti di politici e intellettuali di fama ma numerosi sono anche i disegni riguardanti amici e parenti. Realizza mostre personali a Trieste (1968, 1977, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, 2008) e Ferrara (2009).
Chi lo ha conosciuto bene, descrive Dino Tamburini come una persona affettuosa, impaziente, entusiasta, con un carattere estroverso, che amava i suoi amici e aveva il senso spiccato del clan artistico e intellettuale. Dino ha collaborato su diversi progetti con gli artisti, pittori e fotografi triestini: Livio Schiozzi ha creato i mosaici per la sala passeggeri del Lloyd Triestino, gli arredamenti per il parco Folaga Allegra a Gavirate e ha lavorato con Dino sul progetto del Teatro a Udine. Con Marcello Mascherini ha lavorato sulla Chiesa di San Luigi e alcune commesse private, e Tamburini si è occupato della collocazione urbanistica delle sue sculture come la fontana per il gruppo bronzeo "Cantico dei Cantici" in piazza Oberdan e “Il Guerriero”. Tamburini era un membro attivo delle associazioni artistiche e culturali della città: Officina di Dorfles dedicata al teatro sperimentale, il già citato Circolo della Cultura e delle Arti, la Galleria Torbandena di Giuliana Carbi e Franco Jesurum, la Galleria Tommaseo. Collaborava con critici d’arte e architetti per lo studio dei suoi progetti, tra questi Giuliana Carbi e Nicoletta Zanni. Era amico di Corrado Balest, Dario de Rosa, Federico Righi, Ossi Czimmer, Nino Peritz, Lucio Saffaro.
