Geschiedenis van de archiefvormer

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog nam het aantal studenten uit minder draagkrachtige milieu's toe, met als gevolg het ontstaan van het verschijnsel spoorstudent. Uit de behoefte aan een trefpunt voor in Rotterdam woonachtige spoorstudenten op Delft, Leiden en Utrecht werd op 29 juni 1921 door een vriendenclub van voormalige HBS-ers het initiatief genomen tot oprichting van het Rotterdamsch Studenten Gezelschap, dat op 1 november daaropvolgend een feit werd.
Als algemene vereniging van een toen nieuwe categorie -uitsluitend mannelijke- studenten heeft het RSG zich van stond af aan afgezet tegen de bestaande corpora en hun tradities. Als gevolg daarvan kende men geen ontgroening, geen jaarklassen en kon iedereen aan alle activiteiten deelnemen zonder zich in onderverenigingen te organiseren. Het kroegleven bepaalde zich in het eerste decennium tot samenkomsten in etablissementen [NOTE Zie voor een volledige opsomming inv.nr. 319.] . Hoogtepunten in het verenigingsleven vormden de uitvoeringen met bal na van de Rotterdamsche Studenten Tooneelvereeniging, welke enkele malen per jaar plaatsvonden. Het culturele element dat hiermee al kort na het begin prominent aanwezig was [NOTE Het RST werd opgericht op 30-12-1922.] , zou in deze vereniging een voorname rol blijven spelen ondanks latere veranderingen in het karakter van het RSG.

Door de economische crisis in de aanvang van de jaren dertig ondervond het studentenleven in het algemeen een terugslag. Dit gold ook voor het RSG, dat het aantal actieve leden gehalveerd zag tot circa veertig spoorstudenten en Rotterdamse notariaatstudenten. Door het opgaan van de Rotterdamsche Studenten Bond in het Rotterdamsch Studenten Corps was voor het RSG wervingsterrein ontstaan onder studenten van de Nederlandsche Economische Hoogeschool. De openstelling van de vereniging voor deze categorie sinds 27 april 1933 had enerzijds grote bloei ten gevolge: het aantal leden verdubbelde, activiteiten als muziek- en sportbeoefening kwamen tot ontwikkeling evenals een verenigingsblad. Ook kon nu een eigen sociëteit worden betrokken. Anderzijds ontstonden er problemen omdat het RSG, zich tevens richtend op studenten aan andere instellingen van hoger onderwijs, erkenning door de NEH werd onthouden. Oplossing hiervan werd gezocht in de oprichting van onderafdelingen: de Vereeniging van Studenten van de Technische Faculteit en die van de Economische Faculteit kwamen tot stand in de zomer van 1940. Daar deze bedoeld waren ter onderscheiding van de verschillende categorieën studenten, waren deze onderafdelingen geen subverenigingen in de gebruikelijke zin. De praktische doorvoering van deze juridische scheiding in de vorm van afzonderlijke besturen zou door de oorlogsomstandigheden pas later plaatsvinden.

Naar aanleiding van de op 23 oktober 1941 door de Rijkscommissaris afgegeven verordening dat Joden hun lidmaatschap van verenigingen dienden op te zeggen, besloot het RSG op de vooravond van het vierde lustrum zichzelf te liquideren. De vereniging ging ondergronds verder in een wijkensysteem: men trof elkaar op wijksgewijs georganiseerde bijeenkomsten; de kamer van tweedejaars-praeses Van Delden werd het knooppunt, "Headquarters". In deze tijd ontstond het eerste contact met andere Rotterdamse studentenverenigingen, in de legale Contactcommissie en in de illegale Contactgroep. Na afkondiging in het voorjaar van 1943 van de verordening, dat studenten zich moesten melden voor tewerkstelling in Duitsland leidde het RSG een kwijnend bestaan. De Senaat onder praesidium van Van Delden bleef echter actief als steunpunt voor onderduikers en in de voorbereiding van de naoorlogse verhoudingen, de Toekomstcommissie.
Kort na de bevrijding, op 3 juni 1945, kon het RSG opnieuw worden opgericht; de vereniging telde toen circa 50 leden. De plannen van de Toekomstcommissie resulteerden in de totstandkoming van de alle Rotterdamse studenten omvattende Rotterdamsche Studenten Vereeniging in augustus van dat jaar. Ook werd de Economische Faculteit van het RSG door NEH en RSV erkend: eindelijk was het RSG ook formeel gelijkgesteld aan de andere Rotterdamse verenigingen.

De openstelling van het RSG voor NEH-studenten sinds 1933 had mede geleid tot de mogelijkheid een eigen sociëteit te betrekken. In 1937 werd deze gevonden aan de Leuvehaven Oostzijde 74 en in januari 1940 aan het Haringvliet Zuidzijde 40. De laatste locatie werd tijdens de brand van mei 1940 verwoest. Men vond in augustus van dat jaar voorlopig onderdak op Haringvliet 90. In 1946 kon het pand Mathenesserlaan 372 in eigendom worden verworven én behouden, mede dankzij steun van het in oorlogstijd gevormde RSG-fonds en uitgifte van obligaties. Op dit adres zou sociëteit Asker-IV twintig jaar gevestigd blijven, waarna tenslotte het pand Haringvliet 94 werd betrokken. Overigens dateren de aan de Noordse mythologie ontleende namen van de sociëteit, van de verschillende ruimten daarin en van het blad uit de tijd van de oprichting van de eerste sociëteit, februari 1938.
De tijdens de oorlog gevormde ideeën over één groot, alle Rotterdamse studenten omvattend verband, belichaamd in de Rotterdamsche Studenten Vereeniging, bleken in de naoorlogse praktijk geen stand te houden. Uiteenlopende opvattingen over de functie van de RSV -fusie of federatie- veroorzaakten in juni 1946 middels het uittreden van het RSC het voortijdig einde. De in november 1946 ontstane Rotterdamsche Studenten Raad zou beperkt blijven tot een los samenwerkingsverband, evenals de latere Rotterdamse Kamer van Verenigingen.

De naoorlogse opbloei van het verenigingsleven werd in de eerste van de vijftiger jaren gevolgd door een inzinking. In deze periode waren interne commissies actief, terwijl vanuit de Senaat pogingen tot fusie (met het RSC) werden ondernomen. Aan deze situatie kwam een einde door een sinds 1954 manifeste stroming onder de leden, die de eigen identiteit van het RSG wilde benadrukken. Die identiteit werd gevonden in het zich opnieuw richten op culturele activiteiten: deze kwamen vooral tot uiting in toneel- en cabaretvoorstellingen en in de fameuze boekenweken. Ofschoon het RSG niet langer spoorstudenten verenigde, bleef het zich richten op studenten met een kleine beurs [NOTE Inventarisnummer 257, stuk d.d. 6-6-1963.] . De maatschappelijke veranderingen sinds de jaren zestig lieten hun sporen na in de vorm van afschaffing van de novitiaatstijd (1966), opening van de medische faculteit in Rotterdam (1967) en openstelling van het RSG voor vrouwelijke studenten (1970), waarmee tevens het onderscheid tussen universitaire studenten en die aan hogere beroepsopleidingen is vervaagd. De destijds noodzakelijke scheiding in faculteiten binnen de vereniging bleek achterhaald.

Het RSG kent twee organen: de algemene ledenvergadering en het bestuur (Senaat). De leiding berust bij de Senaat, die jaarlijks door de ALV wordt verkozen en eveneens jaarlijks verantwoording aflegt. Beide organen kunnen commissies instellen ter vervulling van een bepaalde opdracht. Zo zijn de ALV-commissies van permanente aard: Kas- en Archiefcommissie, Beheerscomissie, redactie van het blad. Commissies van het bestuur hebben doorgaans een in de tijd beperkte taak: organisatie van evenementen als wijn- en filmweek, diës- en lustrumviering of van de werving en introductie van nieuwe leden. Daar de voornaamste functie van de vereniging vanouds die van sociëteit was, is bij het RSG formeel nooit een afzonderlijk orgaan voor dat doel ontstaan. Er bestond weliswaar een socië-teitsbestuur, maar deze is door de verwevenheid van verenigingsactiviteiten met die van de sociëteit voortgekomen uit en later weer samengevoegd met de Senaat in één college.
Door het standpunt dat deelneming aan alle activiteiten voor ieder verenigingslid openstaat, hebben de subverenigingen een tamelijk vrijblijvend karakter gehad. De oudste, de RST, telde zelfs in het begin onder de leden voornamelijk niet-RSG-ers! [NOTE Inv.nr. 111, Skald 5e jrg. nr. 6.] . Coördinatie van activiteiten binnen de vereniging behoort dan ook tot de verantwoordelijkheid van de Senaat, de organisatie ervan soms tot de dan bestaande subvereniging. Deze interne flexibiliteit heeft tot grote bloei van activiteiten geleid, echter ook tot organisatorische ongrijpbaarheid.

Voor de historische gegevens werd voornamelijk gebruik gemaakt van lustrumuitgaven (inv.nrs 249, 250, 252 en 254).

Administratieve ordening stond niet hoog genoteerd, getuige de aangetroffen tekst "We hebben het drukker gehad met iets te doen in plaats van te archiveren" [NOTE Inv.nr. 112.] . Het behoeft dan ook niet te verbazen dat er een archief zonder duidelijke structuur is ontstaan.

Bewaring van het archief behoorde volgens het oudst aanwezige huishoudelijk reglement [NOTE Inv.nr. 1, vóór 1933.] tot de verantwoordelijkheid van de quaestor, gecontroleerd door de Kas- en Archiefcommissie. Het vooroorlogse archief is met de sociëteit teloorgegaan in mei 1940. De verhuizing naar het pand Haringvliet 40 kort tevoren had geleid tot het ordenen van het archief [NOTE Inv.nr. 111, Skald 7e jrg. nr. 16.] .
Ons rest een globaal overzicht, genoteerd uit het geheugen van een toenmalige functionaris [NOTE Inv.nr.317.] .

Zowel in mei 1941 als in juli 1945 werd een commissie tot restauratie van het archief ingesteld, waarbij vermoedelijk het verzamelen van vermenigvuldigde stukken voor ogen stond. Behalve dergelijke stukken is uit de vooroorlogse periode alleen de correspondentie van de Rotterdamsche Studenten Tooneelvereeniging bewaard gebleven. Wel zijn ter gelegenheid van het lustrum in 1990 door enkele oud-leden persoonlijke stukken, deels daterend van vóór 1940, afgestaan.

Het archief werd in 1978 overgebracht naar de Gemeentelijke Archiefdienst en aangevuld in 1990.

Bij inventarisatie bleek schoning noodzakelijk; dubbelen en ter kennisgeving ontvangen stukken zijn verwijderd. Thans beslaat het archief 4,5 strekkende meter.

Gegeven de nadrukkelijk informele instelling van deze vereniging en de daaruit voortvloeiende onmogelijkheid van ordening naar archiefvormende functionarissen of organen leek een rubrieksgewijze ordening het meest passend. Hierbij werden stukken betreffende de gehele vereniging en die betreffende deelactiviteiten onderscheiden. De als series ogende archiefbestanddelen, bijvoorbeeld de voor onderzoek naar het feitelijk reilen en zeilen van de vereniging zo belangrijke bijlagen tot de notulen van de ALV's [NOTE Inv.nrs 15-20.] , zijn alle pas bij inventarisatie als zodanig gevormd. De interne ordening van ieder bestanddeel kan derhalve te wensen overlaten. De datering der stukken bleek lang niet altijd exact mogelijk, reden waarom bij de beschrijving van grotere bestanddelen gekozen werd voor een globale datering. De onderzoeker zij dan ook bedacht op de vele hiaten in de veelal als pakken aangeduide bestanddelen.

In 2008 werd opnieuw archief overdragen en wel het gedeelte dat gevormd is vanaf 1988-2005.
De aanvulling werd globaal onder leiding van een archivaris van het gemeentearchief geinventariseerd door twee bestuursleden van de RSG. Vervolgens werd door de archivaris de inventarisatie afgerond.
De stukken zijn op dezelfde wijze geordend als in 1995, omdat de archiefvormende organisatie geen wijziging heeft ondergaan wat betreft structuur, taken en functies.
Omdat de aanvulling van geringe omvang was, is deze toegevoegd aan de al bestaande inventaris.
