Historisch overzicht

De ontginning van de venen ten oosten van de grens tussen de provincies Groningen en Drenthe werden na 1818 pas goed ontsloten. De kosten daarvan werden gefinancierd door de stad Groningen. Langs het ter ontsluiting gegraven kanaal ontstond een lintbebouwing, die later werd genoemd: "Stadskanaal".

Onder de 'nieuwe' bewoners waren ook een aantal Doopsgezinden. De gemeente in oprichting huurde van koopman Cornelis Jans Dopper een woning. De woning werd als pastorie gebruikt en in het schuurgedeelte werd waarschijnlijk op 7 januari 1849 de eerste dienst gehouden [NOTE inv.nr. 106: ontvangsten 1849] . De leiding van de eerste werkzaamheden berustte bij de emeritus Herman Andries Post van Veendam.

Op 21 februari 1849 werd er een reglement vastgesteld [NOTE inv.nr. 1] en ondertekend door 23 leden.
In diezelve vergadering kozen de leden ook een kerkenraad, bestaande uit zeven leden. Op 29 oktober 1849 kocht Hindrik Jans ten Doornkaat als lid van de commissie tot de bouw van de Mennonitenkerk van heer Berend Degenhart, bierbrouwer en koopman te Stadkanaal een zgn. heemstede met een behuizinge. [NOTE Archief van de notarissen te Veendam, standplaats 42, toegangsnummer 116, inv.nr. 114["1849"], aktenr. 142] De heemstede lag ± 100 meter ten noorden van het huis van koopman Dopper. [NOTE Archief van het Kadaster in Groningen en Openbare registers, kadastrale gemeente Onstwedde, sectie A, veldwerk 112] De daarop aanwezige bebouwing werd gesloopt. De heer R.K. van der Velde, lid van de gemeente, werd belast [NOTE inv.nr. 1] met de bouw van het kerk. De verrekening geschiedde in "daghuur".
In de vergadering van 8 december 1849 werd de emeritus Herman Andries Post bedankt voor zijn diensten. De heer Klaas Oenes Feickens, proponent bij de Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (ADS), nam zijn taak een half jaar over. Vervolgens werden de diensten door de Societeit van Doopsgezinde gemeenten in Groningen (GDS) bij toerbeurt geregeld.

Op 9 maart 1851 werd de kerk aan de Hoofdstraat 27 ingebruik genomen. De laan van de stad Groningen, gelegen aan de noordzijde van het kerkgebouw werd later Mennistenlaan genoemd.

De tweede proponent, die namens de ADS mocht waarnemen, was Lodewijk Frederik Goteling Vinnis. Hij kwam op 7 december 1851 en werd op 25 april 1852 tot vaste leraar beroepen. In de loop van dat jaar kon hij zijn intrek nemen in de nieuw gebouwde pastorie, gelegen aan de zuidzijde van de kerk.

In 1857 werd dit bij reglements-herziening het aantal kerkenraadsleden van zeven teruggebracht tot vijf. Voor de begeleiding van de zang werden twee voorzangers benoemd.

In 1862 vroeg de heer Boddema of hij de kerkenkamer mocht huren. Dit gebruik leidde langzaam tot het instellen van de functie van koster. In 1879 werd er een globale instructie opgesteld. In 1874 werd naast de kosterij een houten loods gebouwd voor de stalling van paarden van leden tijdens de dienst. Voor gebruik moest men per keer per paard 1 stuiver betalen.

In 1899 werden in navolging van andere gemeenten de dienstdoende voorzangers bedankt voor de werkzaamheden en een "serafine" orgel ingebruik genomen [NOTE inv.nr. 2] . In 1956 [NOTE inv.nr. 3, "1956"] werd dit vervangen door een nieuw orgel.

De kosterij, leerkamer en paardenstal waren aan vervanging toe. In 1901 maakte men plannen voor nieuwbouw. Op 23 juli 1904 vond de aanbesteding plaats en het gebouw werd nog datzelfde jaar opgeleverd.

Na het vertrek van ds. Josephus Joannes Heep in 1913 werd er besloten om vanwege de traktementskosten te gaan combineren met andere gemeenten. In de periode 1916 - 1946 geschiedde dit met de Doopsgezinde gemeente te Assen. De leegstaande pastorie werd verhuurd en later verkocht. De gemeente had in de vijftiger jaren nog enige tijd een eigen predikant. In de zestiger jaren kwam er een combinatie met Veendam tot stand.

De vernieuwingsplannen van de burgerlijke gemeente Onstwedde voor het centrum van Stadskanaal in jaren zestig hadden tot gevolg, dat kerk en kosterij aan burgerlijke gemeente werden verkocht en afgebroken. De laatste dienst in dit gebouw werd gehouden op 3 september 1967.

De nieuwe kerk aan het Boerendiep werd onder architectuur van het bureau Sterenberg uit Ter Apel gebouwd. Getracht is om het verleden en heden te combineren. De glaswand moet symboliseren de open blik van de gemeente op de wereld om ons heen. Stijl en kleur sluiten aan bij doperse eenvoud. De kerkzaal heeft 100 zitplaatsen en de kerkenraadskamer heeft ongeveer 20 zitplaatsen. Het gebouw wordt door vloerverwarming verwarmd. Op 8 oktober 1967 werd het nieuwe kerkgebouw in gebruik genomen.

De warmte van de vloerverwarming had een nadelige invloed op het meegenomen - in 1956 aangeschafte- orgel uit de oude kerk. In februari 1968 werd het andere orgel geplaatst. Na korte tijd was ook deze ontregeld. In datzelfde najaar werd een elektronisch orgel fabrikaat Lipp uit Duitsland aangeschaft, dat wel bestand was tegen de warmte van de vloerverwarming.

Na het vertrek van ds. Zuidema op 28 mei 1967 volgde een vacature periode. Van 1972 tot en met 1978 werkte men samen met afdeling Stadskanaal - Nieuw Buinen van de Nederlandse Protestanten Bond (NPB). In 1979 ging men op eigen kracht verder, maar zocht ook samenwerking met andere Doopsgezinde gemeenten in de regio : Sappemeer, Stadskanaal, Veendam en Winschoten. In 1989 werd deze samenwerking beëindigd. Op 20 augustus 1989 fuseerde de doopsgezinde gemeente te Stadskanaal met de doopsgezinde gemeente Midwolda ca. De gefuseerde gemeente werd voortgezet onder de naam : "Doopsgezinde gemeente Oost Groningen".

Op regionaal niveau werd de jonge gemeente meteen lid van de Sociëteit van Doopsgezinde gemeenten in Groningen. In het jaarverslag van het jaar 1848/'49 van de secretaris van de sociëteit werden mededelingen gedaan over de voorbereidende werkzaamheden en in 1850 kwamen afgevaardigden van de gemeente Stadskanaal ter vergadering. Na de fusie in 1989 werd het lidmaatschap voortgezet door de nieuwe Doopsgezinde gemeente Oost Groningen.

Op landelijk niveau hielp de Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit in 1849/'50 bij de oprichting van de nieuwe gemeente. In 1921 werd de gemeente lid van de Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (ADS) te Amsterdam.

Geschiedenis van het archief en verantwoording van de inventarisatie

Het archief werd in het oude kerkgebouw bewaard in een houten kist, vervaardigd door de br. R. K. van der Velde. Hij was ook voorzanger tot 1899.

De archiefbescheiden werden in de jaren 1971 - 1973 en in 1993 (aanwinstnr. 7) overgebracht naar het Rijksarchief in Groningen. Bij de Groninger Archieven werd in 2003 (aanwinstnr. 24) nog 1 foliomap ontvangen. In 2009 toegevoegd inv.nr. 150 (zie aanwinstnr. 2009 60)

De overgedragen archiefbescheiden werden geordend, geschoond en geïnventariseerd in 1994 - 2004. Bij de inventarisatie is gebruik gemaakt van de richtlijnen voor het beheer van de archieven van de Doopsgezinde Broederschap in Nederland, uitgegeven in 1988 door de Commissie tot de Archieven van de Algemene Doopsgezinde Societeit (ADS) te Amsterdam.

Het huishoudelijk reglement voor de diaconie der Doopsgezinde gemeente Veendam- Wildervank uit 1855, aangetroffen bij aanwinstnr. 1993 nr. 7, werd overgebracht naar het Archief van Doopsgezinde gemeente Veendam-Wildervank.

De omvang bedraagt nu 1,45 meter.

Openbaarheid

De archiefbescheiden jonger dan 30 jaar zijn slechts toegankelijk met schriftelijke toestemming van de bewaargever (rechtsopvolger), de Doopsgezinde gemeente "Oost Groningen" te Stadskanaal.

Andel Sijnco Hoitsema, 1851 proponent, gekomen van Tjalleberd (Fr.), intrededienst op 14 december 1856 - 3 maart 1898 (met emeritaat), overleden 30 maart 1900 te Winschoten [NOTE Zondagsbode, 13e jaargang 1899/'1900, nr.22, blz. 100, 101] .

da. Molly de Winter, 1984 proponent, beroepen in het samenwerkingsverband van de gemeenten Sappemeer-Noordbroek, Winschoten, Veendam, intrededienst 10 mei 1981 en Stadskanaal, intrede-dienst 17 mei 1981, afscheidsdienst 27 november 1988 (wegens vervroegd emeritaat.)

De Doopsgezinde gemeente Stadskanaal fuseerde op 20 augustus 1989 met de Doopsgezinde gemeente Midwolda ca., gevestigd te Winschoten en werd voortgezet onder der de naam: Doopsgezinde gemeente Oost Groningen.
