Zur Geschichte der Abteilung
Die im Wormser Stadtarchiv verwahrten Kirchenbücher und Kirchenbuchkopien gelangten auf verschiedenen Wegen in das Archiv. Die Bücher der städtischen Pfarreien wurden zusammen mit den Zivilstandsregistern aus der französischen Zeit (bis 1814) endgültig aufgrund des Erlasses des hessischen Ministeriums der Justiz vom 16.11.1925 dem Stadtarchiv einverleibt, einschließlich der Register der Vororte von Hochheim, Leiselheim und Pfiffligheim. Vorher befanden sich diese in den Bürgermeistereien, da infolge der Einführung der Zivilstandsregister im linksrheinischen Gebiet unter Napoleon durch die 'Verordnung über den Zivil-Stand der Bürger' vom 12. Floreal VI (1.5.1798) die Registerführung auch in Worms den Geistlichen entzogen und den Munizipalitäten übertragen wurde. Die Kirchenbücher sollten als Vorakten für die Zivilstandsregister in die Registratur der Mairie abgegeben werden. Für die lutherischen, reformierten und die Kirchenbücher von Liebfrauen - als einzige katholische Pfarrei - lässt sich die Übernahme durch einen Aktenvermerk vom 7.8.1798 belegen (Abt. 2 Nr. 177). Die übrigen katholischen Kirchenbücher waren rechtzeitig vor der Beschlagnahmung an den Zufluchtsort des Wormser Generalvikariates nach dem rechtsrheinisch gelegenen Lampertheim verbracht worden. Am 4.9.1802 wurden schließlich die Kirchenbücher von St. Andreas, St. Martin mit Lampertus und St. Paul vom Pfarrer von Lampertheim an die Munizipalität in Worms abgegeben (Abt. 2 Nr. 177).
Die im Stadtarchiv vorliegenden Kirchenbücher der Vororte wurden in der Regel bei der Eingemeindung als Bestandteil der Gemeindearchive übernommen. Im reformierten Kirchenbuch von Neuhausen (Abt. 108 Nr. 23) findet sich ein Übernahmevermerk von August Weckerling vom 24.4.1898, dem Jahr der Eingemeindung des Ortes nach Worms. Durch Erlass des hess. Ministeriums der Justiz vom 16.11.1925 wurde die endgültige Übernahme der Kirchenbücher und der Zivilstandsregister aus der französischen Zeit (bis 1814) dem Stadtarchiv geregelt und umgesetzt, einschließliche der Register der 1898 eingemeindeten Vororte (Hochheim, Neuhausen, Pfiffligheim).
Im Jahre 1982 konnte ein katholisches Kirchenbuch von Horchheim (Abt. 108 Nr. 43) durch das Archiv aus privater Hand käuflich erworben werden.

Zum Inhalt der Abteilung
In der Abt. 108 werden nicht nur Kirchenbücher der lutherischen, reformierten und katholischen Pfarreien der Stadt Worms aufbewahrt, sondern auch ein großer Teil der Kirchenbücher der zwischen 1898 und 1969 nach Worms eingemeindeten Vororte (vgl. zu ihnen Abt. 40 bis 52). Die frühesten Eintragungen weist das Kirchenbuch I von St. Martin (Abt. 108 Nr. 33) auf, das bis 1588 zurückreicht, während das evangelische Militärkirchenbuch (Abt. 108 Nr. 51, 1893-1919) zu den wenigen gehört, die im Stadtarchiv für die Zeit nach 1798 vorliegen. Die Kirchenbücher von Worms sind bis auf das erste reformierte Kirchenbuch, das im Archiv der Evangelischen Gesamtgemeinde Worms aufbewahrt wird, sowie das Kirchenbuch von St. Rupert, von dem jedoch eine Kopie vorliegt (Abt. 108 Nr. 38, Original im Dom- und Diözesanarchiv Mainz, Hs. 3/054), als Originale im Stadtarchiv vorhanden.
Mit Hilfe der in Abt. 108 F vorliegenden Mikrofilme ist ein Einblick in die Kirchenbücher möglich, die vor der Verfilmungsaktion vom Frühjahr 1986 im Stadtarchiv und im Archiv der Evangelischen Gesamtgemeinde Worms vorlagen, ergänzt durch Filme der lutherischen und reformierten Kirchenbücher von Pfeddersheim und des reformierten Kirchenbuches Pfiffligheim (1730-1826). Für die evangelischen Kirchenbücher - Worms und die Vororte btreffend -, die im Stadtarchiv nur verfilmt vorhanden sind (es betrifft dies sowohl Kirchenbücher vor 1798 als auch insbesondere die des 19. Jahrhunderts), wurde eine besondere Systematikgruppe "5. Nur verfilmte Kirchenbücher" eingerichtet, um einen möglichst vollständigen Überblick über die vorhandenen Kirchenbuchquellen gewährleisten zu können. Unter Angabe der kompletten Signatur, d.h. unter Berücksichtigung der Bestandsangabe "Abt. 108 F" als Bestandteil der Signatur ist der Hinweis auf Lagerort und Überlieferungsform gesichert. Bei den als Original vorliegenden Kirchenbüchern, die zusätzlich verfilmt sind, wird in der entsprechenden Rubrik ebenfalls auf die Filmsignatur verwiesen.

Zur Bedeutung der Kirchenbücher als historischer Quelle
Obwohl die Kirchenbücher in erster Linie für genealogische Recherchen genutzt werden, ist ihre Bedeutung als historische Quellengattung hervorzuheben. Die Wormser Kirchenbücher wurden in einer Dissertation (Rommel, Die Wormser und ihre Stadt) für den Zeitraum von 1750 bis 1875 unter demographischen, sozialen und konfessionellen Aspekten wissenschaftlich ausgewertet. Hier finden sich auch Hinweise auf die Art und Weise sowie die jeweiligen konfessionellen Besonderheiten der Kirchenbuchführung. Auch in den Kirchenbüchern der Vororte finden sich zahlreiche chronikalische Notizen.

Findmittel
Neben der detaillierten Übersicht über den Inhalt der Abteilung 108 stehen für die Kirchenbücher der lutherischen, reformierten und katholischen (hier vor 1700 in einer gesonderten Serie für die kath. Kirchenbücher) Gemeinden der Stadt Worms seit der Zeit von August Weckerling (ab 1898) angelegte handschriftliche Kladden zur Verfügung, in denen alle Eintragungen alphabetisch mit Kurzregesten indiziert wurden. In diesen werden alphabetisch alle in den Büchern genannten Personen (auch unter Berücksichtigung verschiedener Namensschreibweisen) mit ihren Daten aufgeführt. Dabei sind nicht nur die persönlichen Eintragungen (Taufe/Geburt, Heirat, Tod) erfasst, sondern auch die Fundstellen in den Kirchenbüchern bei Nennung als Pate, Ehepartner, Eltern usw. angegeben. Außerdem wurden die Kirchenbucheintragungen unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten in weiteren alphabetischen handschriftlichen Kladden ausgewertet (u.a. nach Berufen, Familienzugehörigkeit, Herkunftsorten). Die Kirchenbücher der Vororte, sind - bis auf Abenheim, Herrnsheim und Rheindürkheim - ebenfalls in Kladden, Karteien oder Listen alphabetisch erschlossen. Darüber hinaus liegen noch Veröffentlichungen vor, in denen einzelne Kirchenbücher ausgewertet wurden, maschinenschriftliche Konfirmationslisten aus verschiedenen Kirchenbüchern sowie Auszüge aus fremden Kirchenbüchern, in denen Eintragungen von Bürgern aus Worms und den eingemeindeten Vororten genannt werden. Hervorzuheben ist auch ein maschinenschriftlicher Auszug aus dem Trau- und Taufregister der niederländischen reformierten Gemeinde in Frankenthal (1565-1699), in denen Wormser Bürger aufgeführt werden. Insgesamt kann der Erschließungs- und Verzeichungszustand der Kirchenbücher als sehr gut bezeichnet werden.

Weitere Bestände
Es soll an dieser Stelle noch auf einen weiteren Bestand des Stadtarchivs verwiesen werden, nämlich Abt. 215 Familiengeschichtliche Sammlung, in der insbesondere in der darin integrierten Materialsammlung von Frau Anneliese Göttnauer (Systematikgruppe 02), Auswertungen/Auszüge/alph. Register von Kirchenbüchern, u.a. Neuhausen, Heppenheim a.d. Wiese mit Offstein, Pfeddersheim mit Pfiffligheim, auch Hofheim (mit Nordheim) enthalten sind [Hinweis: die Register zu den Vororten von Worms sind im Benutzer- und im Archivmitarbeiterraum untergebracht]. Frau Göttnauer hat außerdem Forschungsmaterial und -ergebnisse zu einzelnen Familien zusammengetragen.
Umfangreiche Auswertungen von Kirchenbüchern und Zivil- bzw. Standesamtsregistern von Westhofen finden sich in der Sammlung von August Hübner (Systematikgruppe 04) in Abt. 215 zu Familien aus Westhofen.

Allgemeiner Hinweis
Für die genealogischen Recherchen ab 1798 sind vorzugsweise die Zivilstandsregister bzw. ab 1876 die Standesamtsregister heranzuziehen, die nicht nur für Worms, sondern auch für die eingemeindeten Vororte im Stadtarchiv Worms in Abt. 12 aufbewahrt und durch jährliche Abgaben fortgeführt werden. Außerdem sind in Beständen einzelner Gemeindearchive verschiedene Akten vorhanden, die im Zuge der Bildung und Auswertung standesamtlicher Unterlagen entstanden sind.
