Records creator's history

Historical Note

Established in 1927 during an international conference; prepared by Willi Münzenberg; meant to be an organization against imperialist colonial and semicolonial oppression and part of the COMINTERN's `united front' politics; George Lansbury was elected president and Edo Fimmen vice-president, Münzenberg and Virendranath Chattopadhyaya were joint general secretaries; in 1928 the COMINTERN accepted the ultraleft `class against class' politics; this meant mounting criticism towards the noncommunist members; when in 1929 James Maxton of the British Independent Labour Party (ILP) was expelled, most of the noncommunist left followed; the League's most important activity concerned the Meerut trial in India; disbanded in 1937.
