Jean-Gabriel Goulinat (1883-1972) est un artiste-peintre, restaurateur et chef de l’atelier de restauration du Louvre.
Sa formation de peintre débute en 1898 avec son entrée au sein de l’École des Beaux-Arts de Tours, puis, trois ans plus tard, à l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, tout en exerçant en parallèle dans un atelier. Il s’installe à Paris en 1905, il y ouvre son atelier et débute ses premières restaurations. Peintre de formation, il peint notamment des paysages et a portraituré maintes fois son épouse, Suzanne, ainsi que leur fille unique, Anne-Marie, tableaux qui ont été exposés dans des salons et galeries dans toute la France. Ses activités sont interrompues le temps de la guerre, durant laquelle il est mobilisé dans un centre de radiologie, ce qui lui permet de découvrir les rayons X et ultraviolets et d’examiner des tableaux à l’aune de cette nouvelle technologie. Jean-Gabriel Goulinat reprend son travail à sa démobilisation en 1919 et il publie en 1922 "La Technique des peintures", un ouvrage qui lui vaut de nombreuses sollicitations et salutations dans le monde de l’art en lui permettant d’être invité à présenter ses recherches lors de colloques et de rédiger des articles.
Jean-Gabriel Goulinat entre au Louvre en 1923 en devenant membre de la commission de consultation et de restauration des peintures des musées nationaux. Son implication au Louvre se manifeste également, entre 1925 et 1931, par sa participation, avec Jean-François Cellerier, à la formation d’un laboratoire au musée ; dans un même temps, il commence à dispenser des cours à l’École du Louvre et commence vers 1927-1928 à procéder à des restaurations pour le musée, et est nommé à la commission de conservation et de restauration des peintures des musées en sa qualité de peintre et restaurateur. C’est également pendant cette période qu’une prise de conscience s’opère dans le domaine de la conservation et de la restauration des œuvres, qui fait l’objet de nombreuses réflexions et qui bénéficie des avancées scientifiques et techniques. La création en 1935 de l’atelier de restauration découle de cette dynamique et Jean-Gabriel Goulinat en devient le chef, une fonction vraisemblablement honorifique ne lui donnant pas droit à une rétribution. Sous l’autorité du conservateur du département des peintures, la fonction exercée par Goulinat intègre néanmoins des prérogatives en termes d’organisation du service, de gestion de l’atelier et des restaurateurs. Soucieux de la formation des restaurateurs et de leurs compétences, il soutient la création d’un cursus spécialisé et participe au recrutement des restaurateurs de l’atelier du Louvre en 1935, ce qui débouche sur la constitution d’une équipe de sept restaurateurs.
Jean-Gabriel Goulinat partage à temps égal son temps entre le Louvre et son atelier de peintre, sans omettre de se consacrer à ses travaux en histoire de l’art et de participer activement aux commissions de restauration. Il poursuit ses activités de restaurateur durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, en officiant dans les châteaux et dépôts du Louvre dans lesquels les tableaux ont été promptement évacués dès le début de la guerre. Il coordonne le fonctionnement des ateliers installés dans les dépôts et procède à des restaurations, tout en circulant sur les différents sites de restauration et dans tout le pays selon les obligations qui incombent à ses fonctions de peintre et de chef de l’atelier.
Après la guerre, Jean-Gabriel Goulinat poursuit sa carrière de restaurateur et de peintre. Tout au long de celle-ci, il se révéle être un auteur très prolifique ; en effet, il écrit et diffuse une importante production intellectuelle par le biais des cours qu’il dispense à l’École du Louvre, des publications de ses ouvrages et surtout de ses articles, ainsi que des participations à des conférences et émissions radiophoniques. Cette production, qui prend donc de multiples formes, lui permet de partager par plusieurs canaux ses recherches, opinions et hypothèses en matière de peinture et de restauration. Il travaille en étroite collaboration avec les autres restaurateurs et notamment avec Germain Bazin, chargé de la direction de l’atelier et dont la carrière au Louvre est concomitante avec la sienne. En outre, son travail de restaurateur et chef de l’atelier inclue de procéder à des interventions, mais également d’accueillir des visiteurs au sein de l’atelier, de réaliser des expertises (débouchant sur la production d’examens, de rapports, de constats d’état ou de devis) et d’être sollicité pour des demandes de conseils.
La reconnaissance de ses qualités et compétences dans le milieu de la peinture s’est exprimée par la nomination à des fonctions au sein de sociétés d’art, en devenant par exemple en 1951 président de la Fédération française des sociétés d’arts graphiques et plastiques, et président de la Société des artistes français en 1958, dont il devient le président d’honneur en 1955 et 1965. Il est également reçu en tant que Chevalier (1929), Officier (1938) et enfin Commandeur (1963) de la Légion d’Honneur. Devenu une référence dans le milieu de la restauration, Jean-Gabriel Goulinat aura été un personnage reconnu et respecté par ses pairs et réputé pour son expertise dans son domaine, sa grande force de travail, ainsi que ses qualités humaines. À la fin des années 1960, âgé et sujet à la maladie, il semble cesser ses travaux pour le Louvre mais maintient sa présence à l’atelier, dont il devient membre honoraire en 1971, année précédant sa mort.
