Biography:

Daniel Girard (1890-1970) est issu d’une ancienne famille lotoise près de Cahors. Son grand-père paternel, Ernest-Joseph Angelon Girard (1813-1898), est un peintre miniaturiste de talent, élève d'Isabey, qui a connu son heure de gloire en fournissant en portraits les cours royales et les familles fortunées, avant de voir son marché ruiné par l'avènement de la photographie. Son grand-père maternel, Antoine Berteil est un simple paysan de Valroufié qui a fait fortune à Paris en créant la manufacture de chapeaux de luxe Berteil, installée rue du Temple. La maison Berteil est réputée pour la qualité et le chic de ses modèles. Son père Max Girard (1860-1944) est avocat d'affaires, président de la compagnie des avocats agréés au Tribunal de commerce de la guerre jusqu'en 1913. Daniel Girard reçoit une éducation soignée : il a été élève du collège de l'Île-de-France à Liancourt, où il a reçu une éducation sportive à l'anglaise - il deviendra, quelques années plus tard international de hockey sur gazon et participe en 1908 aux Jeux Olympiques de Londres où pour la première fois le hockey accède au rang de discipline olympique. Après son baccalauréat, Daniel Girard étudie le droit français (il est licencié en droit) et le droit anglais, à Cambridge, en Angleterre. Sa famille le destine à une carrière d'avocat, mais, il doit d'abord faire son service militaire, qu'il effectue à Evreux dans l'Eure, du 10 octobre 1911 au 8 novembre 1913.

Mobilisé dès le début de la guerre, Daniel Girard est affecté à la 3e section des ouvriers et commis d'administration (C.O.A.) du corps d'armée de Rouen, rattachée à la 5e armée. Il est commis de bureau à l'intendance militaire, escorte et parfois conduit les automobiles transportant les officiers d'intendance. Il suit donc le 3e corps d'armée qui participe à la bataille des frontières dans les Ardennes et bat en retraite jusqu'à la bataille de la Marne (6-13 septembre 1914). De mi-septembre 1914 à mai 1915, il stationne en Champagne, près de Reims, puis en Artois jusqu'à la fin de décembre 1915. Il assure alors en voiture, à cheval, puis exclusivement à vélo, les liaisons d'intendance entre le quartier général du corps d'armée et les postes de commandement situés sur la ligne de front. Fin décembre 1915, il demande à être versé, comme agent de liaison cycliste, dans une unité combattante : le 28e RI, alors dans la Somme. Le 21 février 1916, à Méharicourt, son régiment subit une violente offensive de la part des Allemands avec quatre attaques au gaz. Le régiment est décimé à 60% ; Daniel Girard sera cité à l'ordre du régiment et recevra la croix de guerre pour avoir porté secours à un officier intoxiqué par les gaz et l'avoir ramené à l'arrière des lignes. Fin mars 1916, le 28e RI est dirigé sur Verdun et Daniel Girard assure, dans des conditions périlleuses, de jour comme de nuit, les liaisons entre le PC du régiment et ses unités qui occupent les redoutes et les forts de Tavannes et de Souville. Il reste dans le secteur de Verdun jusqu'à la fin de 1916, et en 1917, après deux mois d'instruction au sud de Château-Thierry (Aisne), il suit son régiment sur le Chemin des Dames en vue de l'offensive de Nivelle (16 avril 1917).

Fin 1917, Daniel Girard se porte volontaire pour instruire les troupes coloniales en demandant son rattachement au 7e Régiment de Tirailleurs Algériens, pensant avoir plus de chances de sortir du rang et faire l'instruction de ces soldats dans le sud de la France. Mais en février 1918, une partie du 7e RAT est détachée du régiment pour former le 11e RAT et est envoyée dans l'Oise, pour l'instruction, puis à Saint-Mihiel, dans la Meuse et à nouveau dans l'Oise à la mi-juin 1918. C'est là que le 26 juin 1918 Daniel Girard est blessé à la jambe par un éclat d'obus lors de l'attaque aérienne que lancent les Allemands sur la cantonnement de Brunvillers-la-Motte. Il est soigné à l'hôpital de Vannes, dans le Morbihan et après sa convalescence, en raison de sa pratique de la langue anglaise, il est affecté comme interprète à Aix-en-Provence auprès du commandement allié. Il est démobilisé en juillet 1919.

Pendant toute la durée de la guerre Daniel Girard écrit à ses parents, fait des photographies du front avec son appareil Kodak et dessine dans des carnets personnels. Ses dessins sont alors signés Max Delian, par la suite il signera MD. Il fait aussi quelques topos et croquis pour un journal de tranchées. Ses talents de dessinateur sur le vif sont peu à peu reconnus par ses camarades de régiment et par les officiers qui lui passent commande de caricatures, de menus, d'une frise pour décorer la salle à manger du P.C.

Après sa démobilisation, Daniel Girard renonce à une carrière d'avocat ; il loue un atelier rue Campagne Première et suit les cours de l'Académie Julian où il découvre la gravure. C'est vers l'expression figurative, gouache, gravure et lithographie qu'il oriente finalement sa carrière. De 1925 à 1939, il illustre plus de 70 ouvrages en édition de luxe, sous divers pseudonymes, Daniel-Girard, Max Delian ou encore Dagy. Il réalise notamment une série de neuf gravures sur bois pour illustrer le roman de Dorgelès, Les croix de bois. Cependant, les conséquences de la crise de 1929 qui entrainent la faillite de plusieurs éditeurs a de lourdes conséquences financières pour la famille Girard. Daniel Girard s'est marié en 1925 avec Germaine Dreyfus, fille d'un Alsacien juif ayant opté pour la France en 1871, avec laquelle il a deux enfants. Il continue de pratiquer le hockey sur gazon et participe à nouveau aux Jeux Olympiques en 1920, à Anvers. Il sera six fois capitaine de l'équipe de France et de 1925 à 1939 il se consacre à l'entraînement et à la direction des équipes juniors.

Quand la guerre est déclarée en 1939, Daniel Girard, à 49 ans, n'est plus mobilisable. Il remplace un de ses amis mobilisé, qui travaille pour un journal féminin, Le Journal de la Femme, édité par Taillandier (en juillet 1941 le journal change de nom et s'appelle Rose France, journal de la Française). La famille Girard s'installe à Clermont-Ferrand où s'est déplacée en 1940 l'imprimerie du journal. De 1941 à 1944, Daniel Girard dessine peu mais s'occupe beaucoup du journal : lecture de manuscrits, dactylographie, corrections et surtout écriture de contes. Il fait par ailleurs publier une vingtaine de contes dans d'autres journaux comme Marie Claire ou le Dimanche illustré et en septembre 1942 paraît son premier roman : Romans et nouvelles. Après la guerre, il fera paraitre, jusqu'en 1950, plusieurs livres qu'il illustre lui-même, destinés à des enfants : De Saint-Louis à Lyautey, Les chevaliers de la Table ronde, Contes et légendes du Moyen-Age.

La femme de Daniel Girard, Germaine Dreyfus, est d’origine juive mais échappe aux persécutions car elle ne s’est pas déclarée juive aux autorités. La maison de Clermont-Ferrand devient un lieu de passage pour la famille de sa femme qui tente d’échapper à la persécution nazie et Daniel Girard met à profit ses talents de dessinateur pour réaliser de faux-papiers, initié à la technique par des journalistes parisiens réfugiés.

A la Libération, fin 1944, malgré des possibilités de carrière journalistique, Daniel Girard préfère revenir à son atelier parisien et reprend sa carrière d'artiste jusqu'à sa mort en 1970. Il participe régulièrement au Salon d'automne, au Salon des Tuileries, au Salon du Dessin et de la peinture à l'eau, au Salon d'Hiver. En 1955 une série de 25 gravures du Vieux Paris, bois et eaux-fortes, entre au Musée Carnavalet. En 1957 le musée d'Art moderne de la ville de Paris acquiert deux de ses gravures, « L'épave » et « La bourrasque ». En 1957 Daniel Girard reçoit le prix Taylor de la gravure et en 1958, la médaille d'argent de la ville de Paris ainsi que la médaille d'or des Artistes français.

A partir de 1948, il participe activement à l'organisation du Salon d'hiver au Palais de Tokyo, d'abord comme membre du jury puis comme président de 1962 à sa mort. Dans les années soixante, Daniel Girard assure la vice-présidence et le secrétariat général du Syndicat national des artistes et milite pour qu'ils soient couverts par les assurances sociales. Il est également vice-président et secrétaire général de la Fédération des sociétés d'Art Graphique et plastique, membre du Conseil d'administration de l'Entr'aide des Travailleurs intellectuels et de la Coopérative des artistes, secrétaire général de la Société des graveurs à l'eau-forte, délégué au Conseil supérieur du Travail au Ministère du Travail, membre de la Commission de professionnalité des artistes. Il décède à Paris le 14 novembre 1970.
