Comme toute juridiction, le Parlement fonctionne avec des chambres, des greffes, un parquet des gens du roi (procureur général, avocats généraux et substituts) commun à toutes les chambres, des procureurs (organisés en communauté des procureurs au Parlement) et des avocats. En outre, plusieurs instances , ayant une autonomie plus ou moins importante, méritent d’être citées :
Grand Chambre
Chambres des enquêtes (entre une et cinq selon les époques)
Chambre criminelle ou de la Tournelle
Chancellerie du Palais (dépendant de la Grande Chancellerie mais instrumentant pour le Parlement de Paris)
Chambres des requêtes du Palais (entre une et deux selon les époques)
Au gré des circonstances d’autres chambres ont pu fonctionner :
Chambre des vacations (du 9 septembre au 27 octobre de chaque année, durant la vacance annuelle du Parlement)
Secondes Tournelles (siège par intermittence pour suppléer la Chambre de la Tournelle)
Chambre de l’édit (1596-1669)
Tournelle civile (1667-1691, 1735)
Chambre du conseil (1558-1568)
Chambre du domaine (1543-1548)
Chambre royale du Louvre (1753-1754)
Certaines chambres de justice ou chambres ardentes ont pu être créées pour des procès particuliers, par exemple une Chambre des blés (1709-1710).
Histoire et compétences
Le Parlement de Paris est d'abord une cour de justice, issue de la Curia Regis qui, depuis le règne de saint Louis, assiste le roi dans sa mission de justicier, et siège au Palais, sur l'île de la Cité. Sur son ressort qui comprend plus de la moitié du royaume, le Parlement reçoit les appels, au civil et au criminel, des juridictions ordinaires inférieures (bailliages, sénéchaussées, prévôtés) ou de juridictions spécialisées (juridictions consulaires, juridictions ecclésiastiques...), et instruit en première instance les procès concernant les personnages les plus importants du royaume (ducs et pairs) et un certain nombre de privilégiés. Comme juridiction, le Parlement peut procéder à des ventes des biens saisis. A ses compétences spécifiquement judiciaires s'ajoutent des attributions en matière de police générale et de réglementation. Enfin, le Parlement est chargé de vérifier, publier et enregistrer les principaux actes royaux. Cet enregistrement est parfois différé par le Parlement qui présente alors au roi des remontrances, ce qui peut générer des oppositions de nature politique.
En février 1771, le chancelier Maupeou réforme les parlements. Le ressort du Parlement de Paris est alors démembré au profit de six conseils supérieurs, à Arras, Blois, Châlons, Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon et Poitiers. En avril 1771, le Parlement de Paris qui subsiste est profondément réorganisé. Cette réforme est abolie par Louis XVI en novembre 1774, dans un souci d'apaisement, et l'organisation antérieure est quasiment rétablie.
Les parlements sont supprimés par la réforme de l’organisation judiciaire de la Révolution Française. Le Parlement de Paris cesse toute fonction le 14 octobre 1790.
Ressort géographique
Son ressort s’étend à l’origine à tout le royaume mais est réduit par la création de parlements provinciaux ayant même compétence : Toulouse (1443), Grenoble (1453), Bordeaux (1462), Dijon (1477), Aix-en-Provence (1501), Rouen (1515), Trévoux (1523), Rennes (1554), Pau (1620), Metz (1633), Besançon (1674), Douai (1686), Nancy (1775).

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes : Allier, Cantal, Loire, Haute-Loire (arrondissement Brioude et Yssingeaux), Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône
Centre-Val de Loire : Cher, Eure-et-Loir, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher, Loiret,
Nouvelle Aquitaine : Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, Creuse, Vienne, Haute-Vienne (arrondissements Bellac et Rochechouart),
Pays de la Loire : Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe, Vendée
Normandie : Eure (arrondissement Évreux), Orne (arrondissement Mortagne-au-Perche)
Hauts-de-France : Aisne, Oise, Pas-de-Calais, Somme
Grand Est : Ardennes (arrondissements Charleville-Mézières, Rethel, Vouziers), Aube, Marne, Haute-Marne, Meuse, Vosges (arrondissement Neufchâteau)
Entre 1771 et 1774, le ressort du Parlement de Paris est réduit à l'Ile-de-France, l'Orléanais, la Picardie, et aux régions de Reims et Soissons.
Le Parlement de Paris en dehors de Paris
À l’occasion des événements politiques, ou pour des raisons d’organisation, une fraction du Parlement de Paris a pu siéger hors de la capitale, tandis que l'institution continuait de fonctionner à Paris.
Parlement à Poitiers (1418-1436), Châlons et Tours (1589-1594), Pontoise (1652).
Grands Jours ou sessions délocalisées ponctuellement pour des raisons d'efficacité, entre 1367 et 1666, à Angers, Bordeaux, Clermont, Lyon, Moulins, Poitiers, Riom, Thouars, Tours, Troyes.
Pour mémoire, le Parlement été exilé par mesure disciplinaire, à Pontoise (1720), Pontoise et Bourges (1753), Troyes (1787), sans avoir eu de véritable activité sur place.
