Les Galeries nationales du Grand Palais offrent de vastes espaces à la disposition du ministère de la Culture aussi bien pour les expositions organisées par la Réunion des musées nationaux ou le Centre national d'art contemporain que pour des manifestations culturo-commerciales comme la Biennale des Antiquaires, le Salon du Livre, ou la Foire internationale d’art contemporain. Les lieux sont aussi ouverts à d’autres institutions publiques souffrant d’une insuffisance de lieux d’accueil pour leurs propres manifestations comme l’Association française d’action artistique (AFAA), aujourd’hui Institut français, opérateur du ministère des Affaires étrangères et organisateur de grandes expositions dans le cadre d’échanges culturels avec les pays étrangers.
Les espaces modulables permettent d’accueillir plusieurs expositions en même temps. Ils sont complétés par un équipement audiovisuel performant et un auditorium pour une programmation annexe. Les galeries disposent aussi d’équipes techniques pour la scénographie et l’accueil du public.
D’abord rattachées au cabinet du ministre de la Culture puis à la direction de l’administration générale, les Galeries nationales du Grand Palais sont affectées en 1969 à la Direction des musées de France.
En 1998, dans le cadre d’une réorganisation générale de l’administration, les Galeries nationales sont érigées en service à compétence nationale (SCN), statut qu’elles conservent jusqu’au 31 août 2005.
Suite à la réouverture de la nef en 2005, le cabinet du ministère de la Culture a décidé d’en confier la gestion et l’exploitation à un établissement public (l’Établissement public du Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées [EPGPCE]) créé par décret le 25 janvier 2007.
En 2011, l’établissement public du Grand Palais fusionne avec la Réunion des musées nationaux pour former l’établissement public de la Réunion des musées nationaux et du Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées (RMN-GP), parachevant ainsi le rapprochement entre les deux établissements.
De 1966 à 1980, les Galeries nationales du Grand Palais sont dirigées par un conservateur, Reynold Arnould (1919-1980), puis sont ensuite confiées à un administrateur.
Le Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées est édifié de 1897 à 1900 à l'occasion de l'Exposition universelle de 1900, sur un terrain concédé par la ville de Paris à l’État. L'inscription « Ce Monument a été consacré par la République à la Gloire de l'Art Français », gravée sur le fronton de la façade de l'avenue Franklin Roosevelt indique sa vocation première. Les architectes en furent Deglane, Louvet et Thomas.
De 1918 à 1963, les manifestations qui se tiennent au Grand Palais, en dehors des « salons officiels », sont très diverses : concours hippiques, salon des arts ménagers, salons de l'automobile, etc. En 1937 est ouvert dans l'aile ouest donnant sur l'actuelle avenue Franklin Roosevelt le Palais de la Découverte.
1964 : CREATION DES GALERIES NATIONALES
En 1959, le Grand Palais est pris en charge par le ministère des Affaires culturelles, nouvellement créé. Dès 1964, André Malraux décide de consacrer définitivement le Grand Palais aux seules manifestations artistiques et culturelles. Cependant, l'aile du cours de la Reine reste affectée à la faculté des lettres qui relève du ministère de l’Éducation nationale et la partie sud de la nef centrale est utilisée pour la construction provisoire d'ateliers d'architecture à l’usage de l'école nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
A cette même date, le ministère des Affaires culturelles confie à Reynold Arnould (1919-1980), directeur depuis 1952 du musée du Havre où il a réalisé le nouveau musée et la première Maison de la culture de France (inaugurée en juin 1961), la mission de concevoir, d'étudier, de créer des équipements muséographiques et de contrôler les travaux qui permettront à Paris de disposer de galeries nationales d'expositions temporaires.
ETUDE ET TRAVAUX : 1964-1966
La réalisation des travaux est confiée à Pierre Vivien, architecte en chef des bâtiments civils et palais nationaux. La création d'équipements muséographiques, donnant aux espaces concernés une exceptionnelle capacité de polyvalence et de métamorphoses de volumes, commande la mise au point de maquettes, de prototypes et d'un programme-organigramme.
Le Grand Palais (galeries du pourtour et nef centrale) est conçu comme devant devenir un « vaste complexe d'informations et d'actions culturelles destiné à tous et à chacun ». La proposition est approuvée par le ministre d’État en mars 1965. Les travaux commencent immédiatement et se poursuivent jusqu’en avril 1971, date de l'organisation du concours pour le futur centre national d'art et culture Georges Pompidou. Le montant total des travaux réalisés de 1965 à 1971 s’éleve à 50 millions de francs.
OUVERTURE AU PUBLIC DES GALERIES NATIONALES ET TRAVAUX : 1966-1969
L’exposition sur l’ Art nègre est présentée sur 2000 m² dans la nef dès le mois de juin 1966. En octobre de la même année, une galerie, à valeur de prototype, située dans la partie nord-est du Grand Palais et complétée par un volume provisoire construit dans la nef, accueille l’ Hommage à Picasso qui attire plus de 800 000 visiteurs en trois mois.
Au fur et à mesure que se poursuivent les travaux, Reynold Arnould est chargé d’animer les équipements réalisés et de rendre évidente la nature particulière de l’action envisagée pour l’ensemble des Galeries. Dix expositions importantes s’y succèdent de 1966 à 1969. L’ensemble est inauguré en décembre 1969 à l’occasion de l’exposition Hommage à Marc Chagall.
Les Galeries nationales du Grand Palais ont depuis lors accueilli plus de 270 expositions organisées pour la plupart par la Réunion des musées nationaux (RMN). Elles se sont ainsi affirmées comme un des lieux de présentation d’expositions internationales parmi les plus prestigieux, aussi bien en France que dans le monde entier.
RENOVATION : 1995-2011
Cependant, des désordres structurels provoquent la chute d’un rivet de la charpente de la nef et la fermeture de la nef au mois de novembre 1993.
En 1995, une mission d'études « Pour l’avenir du Grand Palais » est alors commandée par le ministre de la Culture, ayant pour objectif la restauration et la modernisation du monument. Après douze ans de fermeture, la nef du Grand Palais rouvre ses portes au public le 17 septembre 2005 et la gestion des expositions est transférée à la RMN dès le 1er septembre 2005.
