HISTORICAL NOTE

Historical note:

Le Palais du Trocadéro dispose depuis sa construction pour l’exposition universelle de 1878 d’une salle de spectacle dédiée particulièrement aux concerts d’orgue. L’orgue monumental a d’ailleurs induit les dimensions colossales de la salle de spectacle pouvant contenir plus de 5 000 spectateurs. Après la Première guerre mondiale, la salle devient le lieu de nombreuses cérémonies collectives et est utilisée alternativement par les théâtres nationaux ou loués à des artistes pour leurs prestations. Dans le même temps, Firmin Gémier tente l’expérience de Théâtre national populaire avec sa troupe et jouit en partie du lieu. Quand l’édifice est détruit puis reconstruit pour l’exposition internationale de 1937, il prend le nom de palais de Chaillot et induit un changement d’appelation de la salle.

Cette dernière est mise à disposition du directeur de la troupe du Théâtre national populaire, Jean Vilar, de 1951 à 1963. Georges Wilson reprend le cahier des charges de Vilar jusqu’en 1968 où le décret du 21 octobre modifie le statut du Théâtre national populaire. Lieu et troupe se trouvent réunis pour devenir grâce au décret du 9 mai 1975 le Théâtre national de Chaillot.

Il relève alors de deux tutelles ministérielles, le ministère de la Culture et le ministère de l’Économie et des Finances. L'établissement est investi de la personnalité civile et de l'autonomie financière ; le budget annuel, approuvé par les deux ministres de tutelle, fait l'objet d'un arrêté co-signé par eux et publié au journal officiel. Le directeur est nommé par décret pris en conseil des ministres, sur proposition du ministre de la Culture. Son mandat de trois ans est renouvelable. Une commission consultative d'exploitation (CCE) comprenant trois représentants élus du personnel et trois personnalités désignées par le ministre de la Culture a été constituée en 1981. Elle est appelée à donner son avis sur toutes les questions d'ordre général intéressant le fonctionnement de l'établissement. Le théâtre est affectataire des locaux du Palais de Chaillot, palais national et monument classé.

La politique artistique du théâtre est tracé par le décret qui définit la mission assignée au théâtre national de Chaillot : "favoriser le renouvellement des formes et des conditions de la création artistique contemporaine". Dans cette perspective, le théâtre peut présenter "tout spectacle appartenant au répertoire classique et moderne, français et étranger, créer toute oeuvre nouvelle favorisant l'accès aux valeurs culturelles du public le plus large et le plus diversifié, et organiser toute manifestation culturelle et artistique concourant à l'accomplissement de sa mission". Le théâtre est en règle générale producteur de ses propres projets. Il peut toutefois accueillir des productions extérieures, soit dans le cadre d'échanges avec de grandes compagnies françaises et étrangères, soit en collaboration avec des institutions telles que le festival d'Automne, le festival d'Avignon.

Un nouvel établissement public théâtral : du Théâtre national populaire au Théâtre national de Chaillot (1968-1981)

Par le décret n° 68-906 du 21 octobre 1968 est mis fin au régime de concession régissant le Théâtre national populaire (TNP). Le théâtre du Palais de Chaillot, dirigé par Georges Wilson, n’est plus soumis à ce régime contraignant et dénoncé par Jean Vilar. Il change de statut et devient un établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial. Georges Wilson en reste directeur jusqu’en 1972 sous le titre de Théâtre national populaire. En 1973 le sigle TNP est transféré au Théâtre de la Cité de Villeurbanne dirigé par Roger Planchon. Le théâtre de la Cité de Villeurbanne devient alors le théâtre national populaire de Villeurbanne. C'est un centre dramatique national (CDN). Un contrat de décentralisation est passé entre les directeurs Georges Lavaudant, Robert Gilbert et Roger Planchon et l'État représenté par le ministère des affaires culturelles, et notamment la direction du théâtre, des maisons de la culture et des lettres.

Les salles du Théâtre national du Palais de Chaillot reviennent à Jack Lang qui en prend la direction en 1973, associé à Antoine Vitez et Christian Dupavillon pour la direction artistique. Entre 1973 et 1975 des travaux de grande ampleur sont menés par les architectes Valentin Fabre et Jean Perrottet. Pendant plus de deux ans, Jack Lang institue le Théâtre national des enfants qui donne une série de spectacles au château de Vincennes, sous châpiteaux ; puis il loue le théâtre de la Gaîté lyrique et accueille des metteurs en scène de renom comme Bob Wilson. Lorsque Valérie Giscard d’Estaing arrive au pouvoir en mai 1974 et que Jacques Chirac constitue son premier gouvernement c’est Michel Guy qui devient secrétaire d’état à la Culture. Cette nomination induit un changement de direction à la tête du Théâtre national populaire de Chaillot et André-Louis Perinetti succède à Jack Lang. Afin d’éviter les confusions avec le CDN Théâtre national populaire de Villeurbanne, le Théâtre national populaire de Chaillot devient le Théâtre national de Chaillot. Dès lors, lieu et établissement sont réunis sous une seule direction. À sa réouverture le 16 octobre 1975, les salles (Jean Vilar et Firmin Gémier) accueillent un nouveau théâtre national : le Théâtre national de Chaillot (TNC) par le décret du 9 mai 1975. Le directeur est nommé pour trois ans (renouvelable deux fois) sur proposition du ministère de la Culture. L’inauguration se fait avec une création musicale (selon la destination première de la salle historique du Palais du Trocadéro, salle de concert d’orgue). Par mesure de conservation (restrictions budgétaires), le gouvernement place l’établissement en interdiction de produire à compter du 1er janvier 1977. Cette situation d’attente dure plus de quatre ans pendant lesquels le théâtre, à quelques dérogations près, ne peut qu’accueillir les créations de compagnies invitées.

D'Antoine Vitez à Didier Deschamps, un théâtre en transformation : en avant la danse (1981-2016)

Par décret du 18 mars 1981, Antoine Vitez est nommé directeur, pour entrer en fonction le 1er juillet de la même année. Le théâtre est de nouveau investi de sa mission de création et recouvre les moyens de l'accomplir. Antoine Vitez reste directeur du Théâtre national de Chaillot jusqu'au 15 juin 1988, date à laquelle il est remplacé par Jérôme Savary. Avec l’arrivée de ce dernier et pendant les onze années de sa direction, les productions du théâtre varient et s’orientent plutôt vers la comédie musicale. Il reprend notamment à son compte l’idée des apéritifs-concerts instaurés par Jean Vilar. Par le décret du 15 juin 2000, il est remplacé par Ariel Goldenberg qui engage un changement de mission du théâtre en axant sa programmation vers la danse. Les festivals de flamenco et de tango connaissent un grand succès, tout comme « Chaillot nomade » et « Chaillot famille » institués dans le cadre du programme « l’Art d’être spectateur » par Dominique Hervieu, alors chargé de mission jeune public. L’ancienne salle de répétition est livrée au public sous le nom de studio Maurice Béjart en 2001. Dominique Hervieu devient à son tour directeur de l’établissement entre 2008 et 2011 avec à ses côtés le chorégraphe José Montalvo. La programmation dédiée à la danse s’étoffe et le programme « l’Art d’être spectateur » se développe grâce à de nouveaux partenaires comme la Petite Université Populaire de la Danse. Depuis juillet 2011, Didier Deschamps est directeur du Théâtre national de Chaillot avec l'objectif de mettre autant en avant la création théâtrale que chorégraphique. Mais depuis juin 2016, la danse s'affirme résolument au cœur du Palais de Chaillot puisque le théâtre est maintenant connu sous l’appelation Chaillot – Théâtre national de la Danse.

Les espaces de représentation du Théâtre national de Chaillot

La grande salle dite salle Jean Vilar a subi plusieurs transformations. Elle est actuellement dotée de 1 200 places assises dans un dispositif frontal face à un vaste plateau. La salle Gémier a été remaniée (nouveau plateau de 180 m², gradin rétractable de 390 places et équipement technique de pointe) et son inauguration a eu lieu le 13 septembre 2017. Quant au Studio Maurice Béjart, il a repris sa destination première de salle de répétition, d’expérimentation, de recherches et de réflexion. Il est doté d’un dispositif innovant appelé la Fabrique Chaillot permettant aux artistes de disposer d’un espace de recherche qui ne donne pas immédiatement lieu à la production d’un spectacle.

Depuis la location des espaces à Jean Vilar, le Palais de Chaillot a été différemment habité par les arts jusqu’à investir le Grand Foyer art déco faisant face à la Tour Eiffel et ses dépendances. Antoine Vitez est sans doute un de ceux qui se sont approprié cet espace grâce à l’introduction de formes brèves comme des spectacles de marionnettes

Dans le souci d'ouvrir les activités du théâtre au public le plus divers et aussi de donner vie à l'ensemble de l'édifice, de multiples manifestations sont organisées dans les deux salles mais surtout dans le Grand foyer et ses dépendances :

- un cycle régulier de spectacles destinés aux jeunes spectateurs, donnant une plus large place à l'art de la marionnette

- des formes brèves

- des rencontres de poésie

- des lectures d'oeuvres inédites

- des concerts, essentiellement consacrés à la musique contemporaine

- des rencontres et des débats

- des expositions documentaires
