Organisation administrative
Le directeur de l'ENS est nommé pour cinq ans par décret du président de la République. Il est depuis 1996 assisté de deux directeurs adjoints qu'il nomme pour trois ans.
L'organigramme de l'école connaît de nombreuses évolutions au cours des années 1990. La direction est bicéphale jusqu'en 1996, avec un directeur adjoint unique ayant presque les mêmes compétences que le directeur et nommé par décret selon les mêmes procédures. Ce directeur adjoint est traditionnellement de spécialisation littéraire si le directeur est scientifique, et inversement. La réforme des statuts est rendue officielle par un décret publié en 2000 ; ainsi, entre 1996 et 2000, les deux directeurs de la recherche et des études (DRE) ont tenu le rôle d'adjoints du directeur sans en avoir le titre.
Les directeurs des études, qui sont d'anciens enseignants-chercheurs normaliens tout comme les directeurs, sont ordinairement chargés de coordonner les différents parcours pédagogiques proposés par l'école, en lien aussi avec la recherche. Ces postes sont créés en 1991 et succèdent aux secrétaires de section ayant existé jusqu'à la fin des années 1980.
La direction générale des services (anciennement appelée secrétariat général) est responsable des finances et de l'équipe administrative de l'école. Le rôle d'administrateur du patrimoine et d'agent comptable est longtemps détenu par un intendant, poste indépendant du secrétaire général, disparu en 1993 : ses compétences sont partagées alors entre différents services administratifs.
Organisation des études et de la recherche
Les départements d'enseignement et de recherche de l'ENS sont traditionnellement divisés en deux sections appelées « Lettres » et « Sciences », accueillant des enseignants et étudiants en proportions relativement égales. Sont rattachés aux départements plusieurs laboratoires, ou unités mixtes de recherche (UMR), associés au Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) ou d'autres institutions de recherche, ainsi que des écoles doctorales cogérées avec d'autres universités d'Île-de-France. Chacune des sections est coordonnée par l'un des deux directeurs adjoints et l'un des deux directeurs des études ; les départements restent toutefois très autonomes dans leur fonctionnement. La réorganisation des laboratoires en départements date des années 1980 pour les sciences et 1990 pour les lettres.
Les sept départements de lettres sont : philosophie ; littérature et langages (LILA) ; histoire ; sciences de l'Antiquité, ou Centre d'études anciennes (CEA) ; sciences sociales et économiques ; géographie ; histoire et théorie des arts, ou « passerelle des arts ».
Les sept départements de sciences sont : physique ; mathématiques et applications (DMA) ; informatique ; biologie ; chimie ; géosciences, ou « Terre atmosphère océans » (TAO) ; études cognitives (DEC).
La bibliothèque de lettres et sciences humaines est considérée comme un département à part entière et ne fait pas partie de l'administration.

L'École normale supérieure (ENS) est un établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel, dont les origines remontent à l'éphémère « École normale de l'an III » créée en 1794. Elle existe sous sa forme actuelle depuis 1826. Cette école a pour but de « (dispenser) une formation d'excellence par la recherche à ses élèves et à des étudiants se destinant aux différents métiers de l'enseignement et de la recherche (...). Elle concourt aussi à la formation par la recherche des cadres supérieurs de l'administration et des entreprises françaises et européennes. » (décret du 9 décembre 2013).
L'ENS prépare à la soutenance de thèses, au passage de l'agrégation et à d'autres concours publics, mais ne délivre pas elle-même de diplômes aux élèves normaliens. Ces derniers s'inscrivent et soutiennent leurs mémoires et thèses auprès des universités d'Île-de-France.
Le siège historique de l'ENS est à Paris, rue d'Ulm. Elle est parfois dite « ENS de la rue d'Ulm » ou « ENS-Ulm » pour la distinguer des autres écoles normales supérieures existant en France et à l'étranger (Cachan, Lyon, Rennes, Pise...). Officiellement, l'intitulé « École normale supérieure », sans précisions de lieu, ne peut désigner que celle de Paris. Les ENS françaises sont toutes autonomes les unes des autres, mais forment un réseau de collaboration pédagogique et scientifique appelé le « groupe des ENS ».
L'ENS, longtemps réservée aux garçons, a fusionné en 1985 avec l'École normale supérieure de jeunes filles (ENSJF) pour former un établissement mixte.
